This is a review of the David Baldacci Teaches Mystery and Thriller Writing class from MasterClass!

The MasterClass Instructor – David Baldacci

This class opens with an introduction to who David Baldacci is and what he plans to teach during this class. David Baldacci is a New York Times-bestselling author who has written 38 thrillers. He is known for his political thrillers that have been translated into 45 languages, published in 80 countries, and have sold more than 130 million copies.

I’ve always defined myself as not just being a thriller writer, but as kind of a thriller/mystery writer.

In this class, David Baldacci provides viewers with all of the tools a writer needs to follow their passions and perfect their craft. He teaches viewers the foundations of what it means to be a writer, how to balance writing and a day job, how to develop great characters, and how to incorporate pacing, tension, and suspense into your story. Lastly, David Baldacci pulls back the curtain on the business side of writing, by talking about what life is like as a writer and how to navigate the publishing business.

Mystery and Thriller Writing – Who is it for?

This class is for anyone who wants to improve their mystery and thriller writing skills. In the introduction to this class, David appeals to his fellow writers and viewers by saying this class is really for any writer who may be doubting their ability to write a story. He has created this class specifically for any writer who may not be as confident, in a hope that he can dispel some of these doubts and show viewers that they are not alone.

MasterClass Workbook – David Baldacci

The workbook for this class will be your guide to applying the video lessons to your own writing. The workbook begins with an introduction to the thriller genre, a great list of some of David’s own work, and what to expect in the assignment sections. For each video lesson, there is a review of all of the key points made and an assignment section which is split into two sections: writing exercises and for your working novel. This provides two different sets of exercises, one for those who are working to develop their own novel and one for those who already have a novel or part of a novel started.

MasterClass Mystery and Thriller Writing Key Takeaways

David Baldacci has created an in-depth class that really looks at how to develop the story, characters, and page turning action, along with how to tackle the life of a writer. The tools he teaches help viewers build a great foundation of writing skills that includes how to look at the world with a writer’s lens, how to develop outlines and construct chapters, and how to develop pace, tension, and suspense that will build what David calls his roller-coaster storylines. Viewers also get to hear how David balanced writing and his day job as a lawyer and what advice he has on how to make time to write to find the writing process that works best for you.

I always tell writers, ‘Sit back and ask yourself: Why do I want to be a writer?’ If the answer is ‘I want to make a lot of money really fast,’ that’s not a good answer. If the answer is ‘I love words and I love telling stories,’ that’s a really good answer. That means you’re going to stay committed.

What I really liked about this class was how much time David spent on the editing and publishing process. He provides examples of his own editing process in the workbook so viewers can see how he edits his own work. For first time writers, this can be an overwhelming process but David really takes the time to talk about how to work with an editor and what he has learned about the publishing industry so viewers can learn from his successes and mistakes.

Final Thoughts David Baldacci’s MasterClass

I loved this class from the very beginning! David Baldacci has created a class that teaches viewers how to look at the world through a writer’s lens, while also educating viewers on the business side of writing. If you are looking for a class that will provide you with the skills to write suspenseful mysteries and thrillers, while also opening your eyes to the publishing world, this is the class for you!
