This is a review of the Daniel Negreanu Teaches Poker class from MasterClass!

The MasterClass Instructor – Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu opens this class with an introduction to the main topics of the class and to the level of learning he encourages all of his viewers to strive for. This class talks about everything from reading people, picking up tells, hiding tells, tournament strategy, and betting. The class also includes a few recordings of televised poker games where Daniel analyzes what players did well and where they may have made mistakes. For those who are not familiar with Daniel Negreanu, he is a six-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and a two-time World Poker Tour champion.

He has been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, was named Player of the Decade by the Global Poker Index (GPI), and is the only player in history to receive the coveted WSOP Player of the Year award more than once. In addition to his winnings and honors, Negreanu is known for his genial, boisterous personality as well as his balanced lifestyle and his use of mindfulness, meditation, and visualization. Perhaps the thing that Daniel is most well-known for, however, is his secret weapon—the almost mystical ability to pinpoint his opponents’ exact cards through reasoning, deduction, and a superior awareness of human behavior and psychology.

This class is organized into five different sections. The first section is Strategy and Betting Tactics, which is where Daniel really goes in-depth on a wide variety of tactics. He talks about the importance of position, hand ranges, game theory, C-Betting, three-Betting, bluffing, bet sizing, and how to develop a mixed strategy. The second section focuses on tournament poker and how it differs from cash games. The next section is focused on body language and physical tells, while the third section is on the psychological game and table talk. Lastly, Daniel talks about training and the life as a poker player.

Poker – Who is it for?

It’s become like breathing for me, and essentially that’s where we want to get you with a lot of the concepts we’re going to share.

This class is for anyone who is interested in taking their poker game to the next level! Whether you are just starting to play or you have lots of experience, this class has something for you. For those who are just starting out, this class provides a lot of great foundational skills along with more advanced insights that will help you develop your ability to make better decisions and read your opponents. For those who have more experience, this class goes through it all. Daniel’s goal is for you is to use this class to move to what he calls stage four of learning where you don’t have to think anymore, instead it is just instinct.

MasterClass Workbook – Daniel Negreanu

The workbook for this class is a great reference tool! It is full of beneficial reviews, exercises, and appendixes for each video lesson. Each lesson has a chapter review and an up your game section where viewers are challenged to review their own style of play, take notes on certain games, and look at suggested readings. The workbook also has a list of terms for most of the lessons, along with an appendix section that has a variety of button calling range charts.

MasterClass Poker Key Takeaways

Daniel Negreanu has created a very detailed class that really goes in-depth into every aspect of poker. This includes over seven hours of great lessons on everything from how to bet, game theory, and hand ranges. He even has a bonus section on online poker games! Not only does this class provide great foundational skills, but it dives into the physical and physiological game. These sections provide great examples of how to understand physical tells, hide your own tells, how to use table talk to your advantage, and how to manage the metagame.

The more accurately you can pinpoint an opponent’s range, the more sophisticated decisions you can make and the more accurate they will be.

What I thought was the most beneficial in this class was the numerous examples from Daniel’s own experiences and the real-life example lessons. Viewers get to see all of the tactics put into practice, while Daniel analyzes mistakes and great moves by other players. Daniel also goes through some of his own tactics, especially when he begins to talk about table talk and viewers get to see how he uses casual conversation to read players and get as much information from them as possible.
