Bokksu is a premium snack box that features authentic Japanese snacks, as well as a tea pairing to go with it. There are two levels to choose from: Classic Bokksu ($44.99 USD) includes an assortment of 20-25 premium Japanese snacks and a tea pairing; Tasting Bokksu ($29.99 USD) includes 10-14 premium Japanese snacks and a tea pairing. Both boxes offer a discount for longer terms. The snacks sent are not easily found outside of Japan and this subscription ships internationally from Japan. Shipping is already included in the price. I am reviewing the Classic Bokksu.

Other Japanese snack subscription services use mass-produced mainstream snacks that can be readily found in most Asian markets outside of Japan. Bokksu directly sources its artisanal snacks from local snack makers in Japan (some of whom have been around for over 200 years!). We only curate high quality and gourmet snacks, never filler items. We are also the ONLY service that handselects a tea pairing for each box to complement that month’s flavors.

DEAL: Save $5 on your first box with coupon code HELLO.

NOTE: Your first box will be the Seasons Of Japan, shown here.

As always the snacks are packed in there so nicely.

When I opened my box I found a card on top. I think it’s so pretty and I like that they have started putting scenes on the cards because I use them to decorate my desk!

The back of the card thanked me for being a member.

That same beautiful view was on the cover of the informative booklet.

August’s theme is Tokyo Summer. Both levels of Bokksu come with this booklet.

The next page shows what’s in my Bokksu as well as a map showing where in Japan they originated.

Each product was shown and lists brand name, common allergens, and a description.

An idea for a traditional Japanese festival activity was given, and no actual goldfish are needed!

The back of the mag had a glimpse at the next box theme!

Everything in the August 2020 Classic Bokksu!

Takoyaki Tei Corn Puffs I love sweet and salty, umami snacks like this one! I had no idea it was supposed to be flavored with octopus, and the only unusual flavor note I picked up reminded me of curry powder. The texture is like a Cheetos puff.

Kabukiage Rice Crackers: Uma Kara Spicy My husband is a fan of the salty snacks in this box, and if its spicy, even better. I think these look like mini tater tots, but are extra crispy. The spice level is just right and I like the hint of soy sauce and there’s a touch of sweetness.

Puku Puku Tai: Salted Watermelon I didn’t grow up eating salt on watermelon but I know that it is a popular way to serve that juicy fruit. Luckily the salt isn’t strong in this treat. It is a green wafer cookie with a watermelon flavored aerated white chocolate filling. It smells very much like watermelon bubble gum and I actually liked this more than I thought I would!

Picola Chocolate There were two individually wrapped packs in this box. This is a classic rolled wafer cookie, with just a little bit of chocolate on the inside.

Kaju Gummy: Plum & Lychee As soon as I opened the bag I caught a whiff of super sweet, super ripe fruit. The outside has a sweet and sour sugar coating on top of a plum gummy, with lychee jelly in the middle. Very yummy for a gummy, and such an interesting, almost floral flavor profile.

Chocolate Banana Langue De Chat Cookie I grew up eating chocolate coated frozen bananas and this is supposed to resemble, flavor-wise, that treat. It has a chocolate cookie (like the outer part of an Oreo) with a banana flavored white chocolate filling. The filling reminded me of banana candy.

Dora Choco has two soft vanilla pancakes with the best fudge topping sandwiched in the middle. I need a vat of that fudge!

Castella Cake: Butter Flavor reminds me of classic pound cake, and is super moist.

Yaki Tomorokoshi: Corn Arare I always enjoy getting arare in boxes, they are crunchy, salty, and so good. This arare also had fried corn kernels and the whole thing was like buttery corn nuts, but gentler on my teeth.

Beppin-San Cafe Au Lait Milk Manju What an interesting combo! This has soft dough filled with coffee-flavored bean paste. I thought it tasted a bit smoky too.

Petite Strawberry Milk Candy is a strawberry flavored hard candy on the outside and a milk flavored candy on the inside. The whole thing together tastes so good and reminds me of one of those coveted strawberry creme heart lollipops from my childhood Valentine’s Day candy holder.

Sencha Tea I don’t know if sencha will ever become a tea I crave, but the flavor of this one was light and since I didn’t use boiling water or steep for too long, it didn’t taste bitter at all. I just can’t help feeling like it smells and tastes like sweet spinach, but that’s just me! One thing I can say is that I appreciate that tea can have so many different flavors and I know this is popular in Japan.

Blueberry Tart I thought these looked familiar and it turns out that Pepperidge Farm has something similar. The base is a shortbread cookie and the middle is a deliciously fruity blueberry jam filling.

Bokksu is so much fun to try, and I love sharing this taste of Japan with my family! The flavors are quite an assortment and there is always sweet, spicy, salty, umami, and sometimes fishy. All of them are delicious and we each have our favorite type of snack, so I give my daughter more of the sweet snacks, my husband prefers the salty flavors. The booklet is beautiful and I look forward to discovering new flavors (and old favorites) every month!
