This is a review of the Diane von Furstenberg Teaches Building a Fashion Brand class from MasterClass!

The MasterClass Instructor – Diane von Furstenberg

This class opens with an introduction to who Diane von Furstenberg is and what she has brought to the fashion industry. In her first lesson she talks about the importance of maintaining a good relationship with yourself and how the best way to start in this industry is to get your foot in the door, or side door, by interning for a designer.

For those who are not familiar with Diane von Furstenberg, she is a Belgian-American fashion designer who came to New York City in 1970 with two suitcases full of some of her first designs.

Known for the iconic wrap dress, Diane has built her company into a creative and daring leader within the industry offering a variety of ready-towear collections and accessories. The company has a global distribution network in over 55 countries and 1,500 points of sale including 148 DVF-owned and partnered stores throughout North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. In 1976, Newsweek called Diane “the most marketable female in fashion since Coco Chanel” and the wrap dress is now included in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Diane’s goal for this class is to take viewers through the design process by sharing her own experiences and knowledge. She discusses her own personal journey, while also taking the time to explore her successes and failures. This class focuses on developing a product, building your brand, connecting with consumers, and how to use social media to your advantage. The class also has a few lessons that focus on critiques of student designs.

Building a Fashion Brand – Who is it for?

This class is for anyone who is aspiring to create their own fashion brand. Diane does a great job of being very detailed and gives great advice for anyone who is just starting their career. The class would be most beneficial for viewers who are just starting out or have a few ideas. If you have more experience, this class may also be of interest to get new insights or inspirations, because Diane does have lessons about using social media, brand extensions and her own journey as a designer.

MasterClass Workbook – Diane von Furstenberg

This workbook is a great reference tool. The workbook provides a review of each lesson, resources to learn more, and assignments. The goal of this workbook is to guide viewers through the process of beginning their own fashion brand. The assignments that go with the lessons range from anything from developing a product, analyzing strategies of favorite brands, or learning to connect with your consumer base. It also opens with a list of suggested reading before you begin the class, which includes a few of Diane von Furstenberg’s own books.

MasterClass Building a Fashion Brand Key Takeaways

Diane has created a very in-depth class that takes viewers on her journey but also forces viewers to ask the hard questions about why they want to enter into this industry. Through all of her instruction about how to develop your own brand, she encourages viewers to focus their dreams and really uncover what their brand would bring to the industry. As she says in one of her earlier lessons, this class is not only about how to build a fashion brand but how to design your life.

The most important thing if you want to realize a dream is to know what this dream is. The more concrete and the more specific this dream is, the better chance you [will] do it.

I loved how detailed this class was. Diane took the time to really go into detail about designing a product. She talks about mood boards and places emphasis on how a product fits on different body types. There are three separate lessons on building your product, which really outline the process, but also challenge viewers to find their unique design and image as a designer.

What would I like you to take away from this? I would like for you to go through this class, and when it is over, turn it off and say, ‘Yes, I will do it.’

Final Thoughts on Diane von Furstenberg’s MasterClass

This class is extremely detailed and I love how Diane von Furstenberg challenges viewers to be specific with their dreams. When speaking to the viewers and her students she asks the hard questions that force viewers to design their lives. If you are looking for a very detailed class that provides honest advice and inspiring stories about how to start your own fashion brand, this is the class for you!
