We have the full spoilers for the August 2020 Boxwalla Book Box!

This August, we showcase two extraordinary writers : African American writer Percival Everett (U.S.A) Catalan writer Mercè Rodoreda (Spain), along with a wonderful musical gift from Third Man Records.

Here’s a closer look:

The first book in the August Book Box is African American writer Percival Everett’s brilliant novel, Erasure.  It is part satire, part skillfully restrained family saga, absurd & profound, hilarious & moving. You just HAVE to read it. The protagonist, who is also the narrator, is named Thelonious Ellison (nicknamed Monk), a nod to both jazz musician Thelonious Monk & to writer Ralph Ellison (‘Invisible Man’). NPR called Percival Everett “America’s most under-recognized literary master” and we couldn’t agree more!

The second book is acclaimed Catalan writer Mercè Rodoreda’s beautiful novel,  ‘Garden by the Sea’ set in a  seaside town near Barcelona. Rodoreda is regarded as the most important Catalan writer of the twentieth century. We could describe this novel as Great Gatsby meets Wuthering Heights meets Downton Abbey. And yet, this book is more than what those comparisons might convey. As Gabriel Garcia Márquez once said, “Rodoreda had bedazzled me by the sensuality with which she reveals things within the atmosphere of her novels.”

The August Box also contains a special musical gift. We are excited to collaborate with Jack White’s Third Man Records to bring you a piece of Music History & American History: a 12″ Vinyl Record : The Best of Mississippi John Hurt (American Epic Series). We think this unique, influential blues musician adds another voice to Percival Everett’s, in the story of the U.S.A. This set contains compilation of 13 songs, and was restored from the original 1928 Okeh recording using new sound restoration techniques including reverse engineering. It was released as a vinyl record by Third Man Records, as an accompaniment to the American Epic documentary film series made in 2017  based on the first recordings of roots music in the U.S during the 1920s.
