Here’s the full announcement:

As we all continue to find our bearings during this time, we want to share something we’ve been working on since we sent our first box.

From the very start, it’s been our mission to take care of food so food can take care of you. We’ve put this into practice by making clean, nourishing food that answers the call for convenience. But our world’s need for convenience is oftentimes at odds with the needs of our planet: the more we need things at a moment’s notice, the more disposable the solution.

Every time we’re ravenous and settle for a to-go salad in a giant plastic container, we feel conflicted. And as we throw the bowl into a blue bin we hope will find its way to a recycling facility—even if we’re full, it makes us feel empty. It’s not perfect. It’s not even close.

That’s why, starting in a few weeks, you’ll begin to see the next phase of our mission come to life. We’re calling this phase Re:generation. It’s a nod to the regenerative practices we, at Daily Harvest live by, and the impact they have on future generations.

Starting in April, you’ll see that our packaging will begin to transition to 100% compostable* and recyclable packaging. What does it mean to be compostable? It means that instead of sitting in a landfill for thousands of years, our packaging will break down naturally and release valuable nutrients back into the soil.

You’ll see this change first in our Harvest Bowls, Soups, Oats and Chia—instead of in cups, they will now come to you in bowls (that you can actually warm your food in!). Not only will they be made from compostable material, but they’ll also be in updated portion sizes and shapes. And we made these changes with you—after tons of conversations with so many of you, we’ve created a better version of the bowls you love. We’ve been working towards this moment of change, and this is just the beginning. We’ve grown to a size—thanks to you—that’s allowed us to ideate, innovate, and challenge the status quo.

Part of taking care of food means making it easier for you to have choices that are both realistic for today’s need for convenience and the need to decrease our footprint. By choosing this path, we hope you can join us on our journey as a part of the solution. In these uncertain times, we know now more than ever, taking steps towards positive change is our shared responsibility.

Take care,
Rachel Drori
