It’s finally sakura (cherry blossom) season in Japan! This time of the year is so well known outside of Japan that it attracts waves of people to the country just to see the beautiful sakura trees sprout from their hibernating states into lush pink and white blossoming colors. Historically known to be a period meant for celebrating the New Year’s harvest and signaling the beginning of rice planting season, sakura season nowadays is commonly celebrated through Hanami.
Hanami literally means “flower viewing” and generally involves getting together with loved ones to enjoy a sumptuous feast under fully blossomed cherry blossom trees in parks throughout the country.
