The Lyre Thief (The Hythrun Chronicles) by Jennifer Fallon ($22.12)

Her Serene Highness, Rakaia, Princess of Fardohnya, is off to Hythria, where her eldest sister is now the High Princess, to find herself a husband, and escape the inevitable bloodbath in the harem when her brother takes the throne.

Rakaia is not interested in marrying anyone, least of all some brute of a Hythrun Warlord she’s never met, but she has a plan to save herself from that, too. If she can just convince her baseborn sister, Charisee, to play along, she might actually get away with it.

But there is trouble brewing across the continent. High Prince of Hythria, Damin Wolfblade, must head north to save the peace negotiated a decade ago between the Harshini, Hythria, Fardohnya, Medalon and Karien. He must leave behind an even more dangerous conflict brewing between his wife and his powerful mother, Princess Marla.

…And in far off Medalon, someone has stolen the music.

Their quest for the tiny stolen lyre containing the essence of the God of Music will eventually touch all their lives, threaten everything they hold dear and prove to be far more personal than any of them can imagine.

This book seems to have a lot going on, I just hope that I can follow along with all the subplots that will open to a much more interesting and eye-opening plot. I am so excited to see how everything comes together and if each character is able to achieve their goals.

An accident leads to the discovery of a mysterious machine that has rested hidden deep underground for millennia. The machine awakens to begin issuing a series of increasingly alarming, if minor, omens. The omens turn out to be astonishingly accurate, and ever more ominous. As Zedd tries to figure out how to destroy the sinister device, the machine issues a cataclysmic omen involving Richard and Kahlan, foretelling an impending event beyond anyone’s ability to stop.

As catastrophe approaches, the machine then reveals that it is within its power to withdraw the omen…in exchange for an impossible demand.

This has to be the most disappointing book in the series.  The characters we all love are stumbling around like first graders trying to understand a calculus test book. They lose face with their increasingly stupid subjects, and in the last 10 percent of the book, the author tries to tie it all together in the most ham-fisted way imaginable. I was left with more questions than answers. What a letdown! Unfortunately, I didn’t like this book but it is a necessary read in order to complete the series.

Sci-fi is getting more and more exciting for me. I used to think it was just for children but now I am becoming a true fan, though I do think most of these books are better suited for young adults. I have found that the books with a little more tangled webs intrigue me most. I do enjoy seeing repeat authors and I like when I’ve already read a book that’s been sent to me. Keep the great books and authors coming to my door especially with the great price tag.
