Girls Can Crate is a monthly subscription for children between 5 and 10 years of age that promotes the idea that girls can do whatever they set their minds to. Each month features a different female pioneer whose story inspires girls to achieve. Each box includes a 20 page activity book that includes the heroine’s story, 2-3 STEAM activities and creative play props. Boxes cost $29.95 each month and can ship to either the United States or Canada. Although this box is intended for girls, I’m a firm believer that it’s crucial for boys to believe that girls can do whatever they set their minds to! The themes celebrate female pioneers from diverse backgrounds, but the activities themselves are usually gender neutral.

This month celebrated the life of Patricia O’Connor.

The card contains trivia about this month’s heroine.

This month’s pointers are all about being zealous.

The Zealous Zoo Veterinarian is the title of this month’s activity book.

Here’s a page that lists what’s inside the crate.

Dr. Patricia O’Connor Halloran made history when she took the position of the staff veterinarian of the Staten Island Zoo, New York, 1942; she became the first full-time woman zoo veterinarian (and, quite possibly, the first women zoo veterinarian) in America. She began her zoo work at a time when opportunities for career-orients women were limited. Between 1930 and 1939, only 0.8 percent of graduates of American and Canadian veterinary schools were women (the figure increased to more than 60 percent by the 1990’s). At her husband’s suggestion she continued to use her maiden name O’Connor as her professional name.

The activity book offers a wide variety of fun-filled activities that will get the kids busy. This month, it included activities that will help improve the kids’ vocabulary words and knowledge about animals.

Another fun activity featured in the booklet is Shed Like A Snake and all you need to do it is a bottle of washable school glue.

Here are even more activities to keep the kids occupied, a word scramble and a spot the difference game!

Meanwhile, this page features great facts about wild animals such as snakes and elephants!

We’re excited to try making our own animal face sandwiches! Good thing, the instructions are all here!

Yay for experiments! Kids will also learn about birds, mammals, and reptiles through the help of this month’s crate.

They provide a complete set of stuff for the experiments…

…as well as step by step instructions that the kids can easily follow!

My daughter was really excited to try everything!

First up is the Owl Pellet activity!

The crate even included a pair of gloves that she can use for safety, but owl pellets are sterilized.

It looks like something I won’t even touch but I have my own little explorer here to do the job! (Actually I did this in 9th grade bio – and I was pumped to have my daughter experience it WAY earlier!)

Look at those teeny-tiny bird and mouse parts!

She got them all – and identified that she a bird and a shrew with the help of the identification chart.

Next experiment is the giraffe spit activator. It’s messy, but super fun. She added some dye from home and made a great big mess (this is our messes allowed area).

For the last experiment, my daughter colored a wooden snake figure!

She’s really a scientist in the making!

This month’s activities are the best by far! Everything’s fun and engaging, especially the experiments that earned a lot of wows from us. Add the inspiring stories and lessons to the ensemble, and you now have the perfect crate to empower young girls. We love to bond over this box! It’s not actually limited to girls, it makes a great family bonding experience too!
