The Boxwalla Food box contains delicious artisan crafted foods and goodies from all across the US! Boxwalla is a bi-monthly subscription service that offers four themes – natural beauty, artisanal food, international film, or books! In Boxwalla you’ll be able to discover great artisans and artists from across the globe.  After your first box you can switch themes, but of course you can subscribe to more than one box as well.

The food box focuses on small-batch goodies, but only the best!

I love the box itself, which is gorgeous, and save all of mine. The box itself is a luxe cotton rag paper covered box handcrafted by artisans in Rajasthan, India, and no child labor is ever used. The outside of the reusable box indicates which variety of Boxwalla you received. I love how the box itself supports socially and environmentally conscious goals.

The information card is a letter from “The Drunken Boxwallas” detailing each of the products.

There’s a new theme for the year – Story of the World Through Food – the April Box was themed “Pepper With A Chance Of Sweet.”

Everything in the April Boxwalla Food Box!

Sweet Pillar Co. Muhammara Roasted Red Pepper Spread ($5.99) I’m a huge fan of red pepper spread, so I was really excited to see this in the box.

This red pepper spread was up more than a few notches than any other I’d tasted before! Along with roasted red peppers, this spread is seasoned with toasted cumin seeds and sweetened with pomegranate juice. It has a nice touch of heat, too!

Most importantly, the walnuts in this spread provided a great textural contrast! This spread would be fantastic topping simply prepared proteins, eaten with little toasts, or as I love it – right on top of a veggie burger. This was so good!

Laguna Salt Company Ghosted Garlic Handcrafted Sea Salt ($7.95) I’m so excited that this box is about a little heat – but not too much! Despite the name, this peppered salt isn’t searing.

The flaky sea salt is smoked and augmented with roasted garlic and ghost pepper! The garlic in the mix tones down the heat considerably, and this condiment fiend found herself eating it by itself, it’s just so good (yes, you can do that!). I think the suggestion for pasta or roasted potatoes is fantastic – I’m already dreaming of a nice fresh pasta all buttered up with nothing else but this!

Bija Bhar Resilience Instant Turmeric Elixir ($24) No heat in this pleasant beverage mix!

This drink mix was so surprising – for whatever reason I didn’t expect to like it, perhaps because I typically associate turmeric with savory.

It sweetens organic Hawaiian turmeric with dehydrated maple syrup and seasons it with ginger and lemon peel, with the slightest dash of black pepper. The first thing I thought of when tasting it is how amazing it would be as a cocktail mixer. You can also use it in smoothies, lattes, or mix with water, but trust me, it just screams high-end mixer!

New York Shuk Harissa With Preserved Lemon ($16) I think this is the least spicy item in the box.

Harissa is a blend of chile, garlic, oil, and spices, this condiment is rich and complex.

It’s made with locally sourced and preserved lemon, which adds a tangy brightness. I’m having my husband concoct a pizza with this, it’s too good not to feature, but you can add it to sauces, soups, etc, or just use it as a dip!

Mayana Chocolate Mayana Spice Bar ($8) I knew what was in this box when I saw it! If you’ve never had a gourmet candy bar, you pretty much must. They blow regular candy bars out of the water.

This one has a glossy dark chocolate coating and is decorated with pretty swirls.

Inside I found a dark chocolate ganache flavored with ancho chile, sea salt caramel, and… a tortilla chip crunch base! I’ve been trying to savor this giant bar because it’s so good, but it will be gone soon.

What a wonderful exploration into heat and sweet! I loved each and every item in the box. Boxwalla’s Food box is a wonderful box for adventurous palates and those who are starting to make artisan gourmet discoveries. I think the information card adds a lot to the box too, as it explains all the foods, what’s in them, why they are special, how to use them, and adds a little flavor with notes about the ingredients and countries. This month we traveled the flavors of Hawaii, Mexico, India, Syria, and Morocco, and it was a great trip!
