IMG_5405The Globe In Benefit Basket is a monthly subscription that sends one handmade artisan product in addition to a beautiful handmade basket to your home. Globe In is committed to empowering artisans around the world by providing remote artisans with a global distribution network for their goods. With each shipment, you’ll get to learn about the artisans and communities your purchase has helped to support. For those who are interested in receiving a larger curated selection of goods inside a beautiful handmade basket, Globe In also produces an Artisan Box.

IMG_5406Each box arrives beautifully wrapped in tissue paper.

IMG_5407This succinct message is right on point: as a subscriber, you can feel good knowing both that you’re supporting artisans in the forests of Kenya and that you’re helping the environment at the same time!

IMG_5409I loved how this month’s gorgeous basket matched the tissue paper used to wrap it up!

IMG_5410I love these baskets ($12 or 3 for $30)! I used last month’s purple basket to contain my daughter’s ring stacker toy. I’m going to use this month’s basket to contain a different stacking toy. These baskets are produced by a weaving collective in Oaxaca, Mexico, specifically for Globe In using previously discarded palm fronds and water-based paints. Each basket is 6″ in diameter and 5″ tall.

IMG_5413 (2)This month’s feature product is the Kitenge Tote, made by Wildlife Works in Kenya.

IMG_5414Wildlife Works is a company committed to reducing carbon emissions by preserving and restoring forested land in Kenya. It does this by offering jobs to those who might otherwise have had to destroy native timberland to survive. Jobs include horticulture, carpentry, conservation and finance. Wildlife works regularly underwrites the development of small businesses, like the one that produced this month’s bag.

I love how each month Globe In shares a story of one of the artisans behind that month’s featured item! This month features Nora Matunda, a supervising seamstress in Wildlife Works’ Eco Factory, who decided against a career in charcoal burning out of concern for the environment. After leaving her family’s farm to study tailoring, she returned to her village and established her own business. Now employed under the Wildlife Works umbrella, Nora and other parents are eligible for childcare support from the company and can send their children to Wildlife Works’ free preschool.

IMG_5419 (2)This Kitenge Tote is gorgeous! It’s large, strong and very attractive! As someone who used to make her own purses, I’m extremely impressed by both the construction of this and its relatively low cost.

IMG_0602I can’t wait to head into town with this bag in tow!

This is the second month I’ve received Globe In’s Benefit Basket, and I couldn’t be happier with the quality or value in what they’ve sent. I love the global influences in all of their products, and I love that they support small artisans around  the world. I can’t wait to see what they send out next month!
