Everything in the May 2016 box. Note that subscriptions close on the 15th of every month.

I was really impressed with the quality of the printed items in the box – it’s all top notch. There was the Activity Book, featuring the Woman of the month Malala Yousafzai, as well as the collector’s cardThe collector’s card features fun facts about Malala.

Our kids love reading the books from cover to cover. Even though this crate is designed for girls, we wouldn’t hesitate to subscribe for a boy (they should know that Girls Can too!).

An activity in the back of the book encouraged kids to learn about math and geography. The booklet itself is a full 20 full-color pages and is incredibly well-produced.

Our kids loved playing school!

The box included a chalkboard to assist with the pretend play. My daughter was particularly fascinated by Malala’s story. I’m going to be checking the book about Malala written for kids from the library for her this summer. I love it when boxes can be extended through other activities.

The first activity we did was language arts class – making story blocks. We cut up squares and used Mod Podge (everything included of course) to adhere them to the blocks.

After they were dry the kids rolled the location, item, and occupation blocks to create story-telling scenarios (often very silly!).

For Geography we made a papier mache globe! We did this one weekend and let it hang out in the dining room until the next week.Girls Can! Crate May 2016 (2)

Then we were able to stick all the continents on.Girls Can! Crate May 2016 (3)

This was fun! Altogether a messy activity but worthwhile.

Grils Can! Crate May 2016 (17)

For science class we used pipe cleaners to make an object to grow crystals on.Grils Can! Crate May 2016 (18)

We dissolved included borax crystals in water and submerged our word.Girls Can! Crate May 2016 (5)

I think we used too much water, because our crystals only grew on the stick, but if we had left the water to evaporate they would have formed on the word. I used the opportunity to discuss failure with my daughter and how it’s ok to have a plan not work perfectly.

Here’s a sneak peek on who’s to expect next month.

This is a fantastic subscription box! Although their target market is girls, I wouldn’t hesitate to grab it for a boy either – my son loved everything and I think it’s important for both genders to be exposed to fearless women as they grow. I was truly impressed with the quality of the items and my kids had great fun with the activities.
