IMG_2251Lil’ Bear Book Club is a family owned and run monthly subscription service that sends either 3-4 board books or 2-4 picture books to your home each month. As such, the service is geared toward families with children 0-6 years of age.

IMG_2252All books arrive wrapped in attractive tissue paper.

IMG_2253Each book is also individually wrapped! I love how special this makes children feel when receiving books from Lil’ Bear Book Club!

IMG_2254Each box includes a list of the enclosed books along with their suggested retail prices.

This month’s shipment included the following:

  • I’ll Never Let You Go by Smriti Prasadam-Halls ($7.99)
  • Nobunny’s Perfect by Anna Dewdney ($6.99)
  • Where is Baby’s Belly Button by Karen Katz ($5.99)
  • Spot’s First Walk by Eric Hill ($7.99)

Where is Baby’s Belly Button? by Karen Katz is a delightful lift-the flap book. It is very similar to the jellycat book, Where is My Belly Button?. I had to try very hard to say the words in this book as, after four years, I have the words to Where is My Belly Button? down. My daughter enjoyed this book very much. She loves lift-the-flap books in general (Dear Zoo is her favorite book), and she is at the age where she loves showing off her belly button when asked. This book was perfect for her. I enjoy Karen Katz’s writing and illustration styles. We have My First Chinese New Year at home, and my son enjoys reading it every winter. I’ve always thought the illustrations to In Grandma’s Arms are delightful. This book was a win for both of us.

Spot’s First Walk by Eric Hill was another lift-the-flap book. Unfortunately, I thought this one missed the mark. While my daughter enjoyed the flaps very much, I had trouble with the text. I thought it was a bit too abstract for her to appreciate. Instead of reading the text, I was forced to come up with my own words. Although this is probably what I should always be doing anyway, sometimes I just want to cuddle, veg and go on autopilot. That was not possible with this book.

Nobunny’s Perfect by Anna Dewdney was my least favorite of the four books. It painted stages of normal development in a negative light. Given that this is a board book, one can assume it was written for very young people (0-2), and it’s not reasonable to expect 0 and 1 year olds to share, for instance. This doesn’t mean they’re bad, as portrayed in this book, but that they haven’t hit that developmental milestone. Overall, I thought this was a very negative book, and I won’t be reading it again (I did like the title, though!).

I’ll Never Let You Go by Smriti Prasadam-Halls was my favorite of the four books. The text was sweet and loving, and the illustrations were delightful. I could happily read this again and again. We do not currently own any other books by this author, but now I know to seek her out.

I very much enjoyed my first shipment from Lil’ Bear Book Club. My daughter loved the reading time we shared and the new books we added to her collection. I think that, overall, the curation was excellent. I appreciated how the books all had different themes, and I liked that half of them were lift-the-flap books. I was also very pleasantly surprised that we did not already have any of these books (we have a lot of books!). The presentation with individually wrapped books is a great touch! I can tell that a lot of care and attention to detail went into this family-run business. I can’t wait to see what’s inside next month’s box!

I’m sorry to hear that! They’re supposed to send us the same box that they send out, so you must have received the April box. I’m surprised the itemized list wasn’t included. I thought it was a helpful addition to the March box. Unfortunately, I haven’t received another box from them, so I have no way to compare your contents with mine.

You never know with kids–your little one might enjoy books for older kids even as an infant! My son certainly did, although my daughter did not. When he was an infant, my son’s favorite book was “Where the Wild Things Are” followed closely by “The Lorax.” Now, “Where the WildThings Are” scares him. My daughter, on the other hand, prefers “Pat the Bunny” and “Dear Zoo.” Maybe you’ll luck out and find that you’re able to enjoy these earlier than you think. Fingers crossed!

I just got my first box and was rather disappointed. The March box looks so fantastic, I guess I got the April box, there was no letter or itemized list. I picked the 3-4 board books and got 3 board books, but two are kind of above the age range I was trying to get. I’m currently pregnant and they’re books for kids past infancy.

This looks like a great subscription! On their site it has the monthly option for $16.99 for four board books. If you try the coupon, it doesn’t take anything off. So is it normally $21.99 and all first time subscribers get it at $16.99?

I updated the post with the new coupon. Sorry I didn’t catch it when we set it up. FYI – the subscription is $16.99 + $5 shipping. The coupon works on the subscription price, not the shipping. We always have the total price of each month for easier comparison.
