NEW: Now you can select the themes for your subscription! Visit the subscription page, pick the Dress-Up box, and select the Build Your Own tab. You’ll be able to see all the available themes. You can see what’s in the box on the Pretend Play Packages page.
The quarterly dress-up kit comes in a big box, with everything tucked safely inside.
Each kit has an envelope containing some bonus decorations and a handle for transforming the box into a reusable suitcase.
The Safari kit was our selection for this quarter. Along with paper wrapper, the costume itself was protected by its original plastic commercial packaging. You can purchase the boxes individually and see the other themes here.
The box contains a letter to your child setting the scene! We joined Ranger Twiga and Tracker Tembo on a safari.
The dress-up item is a Backyard Explorer Role Play Set from Melissa & Doug. It includes a vest with name tag, a bug jar with magnifying lid, a pair of binoculars, and a pith-style hat.
Due to inclement weather, we limited our initial expedition to a small game reserve. Very small. The lid to the bug jar is an actual magnifying glass.
The binoculars are great fun, too. They adjust in size and have a break-away (but re-connectable) cord for safety. The binoculars have a slight magnification, so they feel real.
Good dress-up costumes always bring out the sillies.
An Adventures with Riley book came with the kit. Appropriately, this adventure featured a South African safari.
The style of the book is great! It combines real photography and illustrations, balancing a kid-friendly narration with actual photos of wildlife.
Information about the animals, geography, and culture are presented in factoid boxes alongside the story.
A set of Melissa & Doug Animal Pattern Blocks completed the theme — a tiger and elephant are among the ten animals included in the set. Kids are challenged to arrange the different shaped blocks to fill in the various animals. This is really big – much larger than it appears in the photo.
The dress up edition of My Pretend Place always has a well constructed and comfortable outfit. This quarter’s outfit is good for indoor play (the helmet is a favorite of our youngest), but it is sure to see alot of use as the weather warms up again, as well. We keep all the outfits for later use, and the kids are always getting them out to play with. The monthly mailings from My Pretend Place remind the kids to play with their costumes throughout the quarter, but we find that they are fun long beyond that.
