btizzy pwdmedley club october 2015 box

pwdMEDLEY Club is a new monthly subscription box from bTizzy, an organization with the goal to increase the economic power for people with disabilities (PWD). PWD experience a 70% unemployment rate, and bTizzy’s mission is to help provide a marketplace and increase employment opportunities and the self-esteem of PWD. There is no pity party at bTizzy – only celebrating the lives of every day people who live a little differently than most of us. I think this is an awesome idea.

The packaging for this box was really great! All the flat things were against the box and the breakables were properly secured.

Wine Tag ($1.75): just pop it on a bottle and gift! These gift tags are made by teens with developmental disabilities in New Jersey. Jon, who loves beading and making jewelry, is the inspiration behind “Yard” Work & More, an organization that gives PWD recreational, social and leisure opportunities while also building business and life skills.

Alex Elman 100% Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($20): Alex lost her vision in her mid 20s and her award-winning olive oils include braille on the label. I love the illustration, which depicts her with darkened glasses and her guide dog. I can’t wait to try this one! This is a full 16-ounce bottle of olive oil.

Greeting Cards ($4.45): These cards were designed by Lavaun and Alisa. Alisa’s “Yellow Orange” notecard is on the top, Lavaun’s “Peace Bird” is on the bottom. Lavaun has limited vision and relies on her intuition and flashing images to guide her work. Alisa uses luminous water colors in her expressions. She wasn’t diagnosed with Aspergers until 50.

I would have liked to see these cards in full color. The first one looks totally my style and something I would hang on my wall. This is a fairly new box so I am expecting them to improve as they grow.

France Bowtie ($27) Michelle has a rare disease (erythropoietic protopophryia) that forced her to avoid most light. We absolutely loved this fantastic bow tie design. It’s really quite snazzy.

This box really surprised me with the depth and breadth of the items being produced by people with disabilities.  Inside was a truly diverse mix of products from a group of artisans that find beauty and joy in lives that are very different than our own. I love the attitude of this endeavor in creating a true marketplace for artisans with disabilities.
