The Austin Bat Box is a monthly indie and artisan subscription box from Austin TX! Every month you’ll receive 4-5 items that coordinate with that month’s theme. Items range from food and beverages, handmade artisan items, art, music, fashion items, decor, jewelry, games, beauty products, and a whole bunch of weird stuff – because let’s face it, it’s Austin! I honestly thought the name stemmed from the keep Austin weird campaign, but it turns out that it’s named after their local bat colony. Also weird.
The theme for February is the Love My City box!
All the information is on the card – and most importantly the makers’ websites!
Everything in the February 2016 Austin Bat Box!
Outhouse Designs Keep Austin Weird 16 oz Mug & Bottle Opener Keychain: This set features the Keep Austin Weird slogan. outhouse does custom screen printing in Austin so it’s a great way to highlight a local small business and get cool swag. I was super happy with the soup bowl mug and its large ice cream sundae size. Pun semi unintended.
The back of the keychain encourages you to support local music! And obviously the little (I don’t know the technical term) hook on the guitar will open a bottle!
Gato the Taco Thief Ceramic Coaster Tile by Lori Struble/Lady Alchemy13 (Artist of the Month!) This is awesomely weird. I have already deemed it deskworthy. It reminds me of my cat, who was as weird as this tile coaster. Obviously weird in a good way! This was my favorite subscription box item of the week.
Cornucopia Popcorn Creations Chocolate Covered Cherry: I have sampled this maker before but I didn’t realize they were from Austin. I ate half the bag of cherry covered popcorn in minutes because I just kept on stuffing it in my face. My favorites were definitely the pieces covered in chocolate. It was great!
South Austin People (So.A.P.) South Austin Mud Deluxe Bar: The first thing I noticed when checking this bar out was that this company calls their scents flavors. I therefore liked them immediately. You can use the coupon they included online or at a local farmers market, which was also awesome.
This bar is “strong enough for a dirty hippie, weak enough for a dirty CEO.” That’s just weird! So is the roughness factor on the bar, which is 3 – right in the middle of solid jelly and cat’s tongue. This bar contains desert mud and essential oils to help clarify your skin!
As always a fun and useful box with a great Austin point of view. I always think this box is really great and showcases local craftspeople, artisans, musicians, and businesses that I’ve never heard of. A subscription would make a really awesome gift for anyone who either loves Austin, weird stuff, or even is just a SXSW addict!
