HOOT For Kids is a monthly subscription box that delivers high-quality toys and books for children 0-6 years of age to your home. Each box is unique; items are selected based on a child’s age and developmental stage by a pediatric occupational therapist with over 25 years of experience working with young children. Each individual box costs $34.99, but the cost can go as low as $29.99 with a year-long commitment. Shipping is included with each order.
In addition to receiving a monthly treasure chest of books and toys, subscribers also have access to additional activity suggestions online. They may also purchase additional toys and gifts from HOOT for Kids!’s online shop.
HOOT (Hands-On Occupational Therapy) for Kids! was born from the belief that using high quality, developmentally-appropriate toys can help children reach developmental milestones. The individuals behind HOOT for Kids! believe that toys can be used to help “address a child’s physical limitations, sensory integration issues, speech and language concerns and other developmental delays including Autism Spectrum Disorders.” As such, they scour the market for the most developmentally engaging toys they can find.
My daughter’s first HOOT Treasure Box included a book, a toy car, and a set of animals and nesting houses.
My daughter loves animals and cars, so I knew that she would love this box as soon as I opened it!
Along with my daughter’s toys and books, this month’s box included a helpful handout that describes HOOT for Kids! and its mission.
Along with the book, toys and introductory information, my October 2016 HOOT for Kids! box included a description of this month’s toys along with activity suggestions for my almost two-year-old.
While I loved the activity suggestions on this page and the toys and book included in this month’s box, I thought the descriptions of the toys and book may have been intended for a younger child than my almost two-year-old daughter.
My daughter loved “Hoot: A Hide-and-Seek Book of Counting” ($5.64)! She’s a huge fan of owls, knows all of her colors and is working on her numbers. This book was perfect for her!
She liked Janod’s 2014 Story Racing Car ($6.49) as well!
Both of my kids enjoyed pushing this adorable red racer back and forth to one another.
HABA’s Peekaboo Zoo ($14.99) is really cool! Children can use the animals and nested houses in a number of different ways.
While my daughter stacked the animals on top of one another, my son tried his hand and building a wide-based tower with the pentagonal house shapes. I’m not sure that either of these activities were intended, but they were a lot of fun. I like that each animal fits nicely into at least one house. Also, if you stack up the homes on their sides, kids can complete a tree puzzle. Kids can also stack the houses by numbers or size. If kids want one animal to fit into each house, they can either order the animals by size or they can match the animal’s pattern with the pattern on the side of the house. Neat!
My daughter’s first box from HOOT for Kids! was a hit! I appreciated the helpful activity suggestions, and my daughter very much enjoyed playing with her new toys. It’s worth noting that the value of this month’s box didn’t quite meet the cost of the box (which included shipping). The folks behind HOOT for Kids! haven’t published any guidance as to what to expect with regard to value, so we’ll keep an eye out for this on future shipments. I did appreciate the curation of this box, though, and that is worth something. We can’t wait to see what they send out next month!
