tinker crate august 2015 box

Yes bottle rockets!!! We have just as much fun with Tinker Crate as our kids!  Tinker Crate is a subscription box that inspires kids to explore and learn about science, engineering, and technology, plus have tons of fun. Every month, you’ll get a new crate to help kids develop a tinkering mindset and creative problem solving skills. It is STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focused and designed to help kids build their problem solving skills and to gain the confidence and curiosity to tackle problems where there’s no one right answer.

This was everything that arrived in our August 2015 Tinker Crate – the supplies, a fold-out instruction sheet, and the Tinker Zine.

August’s project was a bottle rocket, which was a really great and easy project. The sheet tells you everything that came in the box, some tips, and help if you can’t get it to work.

The instructions are clear and easy to follow and include both visuals and text.

The Tinker Zine this month.  The theme was soda science and the balloons included in the box were for the extra science activities in the booklet!

There’s fun and engaging text, plus try this out activities. Our daughter reads the magazine cover to cover and we find that she has great retention of the information. The style is conversational while still being 100% accurate. There’s all sorts of goodies in here – read the whole thing!

The magazine explains the concept of the project using accessible and easy to understand diagrams.  I was really happy that the box included the balloons and all the information/activities for learning about some of the properties of air.

This last one was more complex but has a recipe for homemade poprocks.

The box included the balloons for the investigative activities in the magazine, and the baking soda and citric acid for shooting off the rocket. I liked that they went with citric acid instead of making parents buy vinegar – it meant that everything was in the box!

This was a pretty easy assembly though I had to help with some tricky bits.

We assembled the rocket.

And prepared the “launch mixture.”

And got that puppy launched! Launching footage is in the video embedded below – but I have to warn you about my terrible cold, I didn’t realize how bad it was until today! The launch footage is at the end (but as always, our videos are only a few minutes long).

This was another great box and I thought the experiments in the box were awesome this month. We love Tinker Crate, because the science is really accessible and the projects are just fantastic!
