It’s time to learn how to weave and create your own tapestry! Doodle Crate is a member of the KiwiCo family geared toward kids 9+. It inspires young makers to learn new skills and gain creative confidence through craft and art projects by teaching them basic and intermediate techniques of a new artistic medium each month. It is gender neutral and also excellent for anyone (even adults) wanting a craft subscription. In our experience, this is the best “arts and crafts” box for older kids, tweens, teens, and adults.

Every crate comes with everything you need to complete the project, except for a few basic items from your home, as well as a booklet — they recently updated the format from a fold-out pamphlet to a true, staple-bound booklet.

All the supplies for the project.

The booklet has excellent, textbook quality background on the subject matter of the project — this crate included weaving terminologies. The booklet is loaded with high-quality pictures and illustrations to both give you ideas and help you along. Doodle Crate is great at giving some perspective and inspiration for their projects.

The instructions are clear and easy to follow and broken down step by step, and my daughter reads every step before we begin. There are lots of pointers and helpful tips located throughout. This project really consisted of two separate projects, since the first order of business was actually constructing your very own loom.

Adult assistance is helpful for some tasks, like assembling the loom.

Some crates have lots and lots in the way of background — this project walked through the steps in great detail, providing diagrams for all the essentials. Some basic patterns were provided for those short on inspiration, but the possibilities are limitless.

There are a lot of weaving techniques that you’ll learn after this project! Along with the basic warp thread, the box provided three kinds of weft and even some roving to give you lots of options.

My daughter liked using a needle as a shuttle — she loved choosing the various yarns to create a pattern.

The booklet teaches you how to finish your tapestry with a clean, professional look — no taping or gluing loose ends. It even has a suggestion for adding tassels for embellishment. You can now display your work of art!

Here’s their (almost) finished product! One of the great things about this project is the amount of time it takes to complete — there is a lot of crafting time to be had here. If the crafter can tie the simple knots, even a younger child can do this project needing adult assistance only (perhaps) at the very end.
We are loving how this is turning out and can’t wait to complete it and make our wall hanging!
Doodle Crate is lots of fun — the projects are open-ended, so the difficulty is scalable to age — you can get as complex in your design as you wish, or you can keep it simple. In either case, we think that the resulting projects are keepable, giftable, and high-quality, and that the techniques are appropriate and well-suited for the 9-16+ target age range.
