Everything in the June Culture Carton.

Sutter Buttes Meyer Lemon Olive Oil ($15 on card, $23.99 on Amazon): Oil from the first pressing of California grown olives, infused with the distinctive, bright flavor of Meyer lemons.

Perfect for poultry, fish, veggies, and Middle Eastern salads, this kitchen staple provides a healthy fat for cooking and adds an almost sweet citrus twist to your food.

Jacobsen Salt Co Flake Finishing Sea Salt ($12 on card, $11.72 on Amazon): Traditionally harvested flake sea salt. The huge size of the flakes add a gourmet appearance to either savory or sweet foods.

Harvested in Oregon, this salt contains nothing apart from natural sea salt and the trace minerals that give it a nuanced flavor you can’t get from iodized or even Kosher salt.

Jonathan Alden Solid Walnut Spice Box ($24): A beautiful walnut box for storing your frequently used spices. The lid pivots open for easy access — its ideal for seasonings, like salt, that you sprinkle on with your hands.

The base is unstained to create a nice contrast.

The top has the Culture Carton logo with a kneeling Apollo loosing an arrow.

On The Road By John Kerouac ($18 on card, $8.34 on Amazon): The Beat writer’s most famous work, On the Road is an essential part of the canon of 20th century American literature.

This special edition contains draft sections, including a cool feature that shows passages in both their original and reworked form.

The work shows the original text of the work, as it was typed on a “scroll” made from rolls of tracing paper.

The pages are rough-cut, giving the book a raw and unfiltered feel to match the text.

This is fun subscription for self-improvers. Culture Carton refreshingly addresses those areas of life often overlooked in the subscription box world — finances, cultural refinement, and intellect. This box focused on flavor, pairing some simple but elegant cooking essentials with a really great book choice. I like that it limits itself to a manageable number of high-quality items instead of lobbing in cheap stuff as filler. The value is usually good – this month had a value of about $67-69 (the book is available for $10 less than stated, but they undervalued their olive oil by $8, so it’s nearly a wash) – pretty good deal for a $40 subscription.
