Here’s everything you need to know about this at-home hair coloring subscription

Madison Reed Review

For some, taking care of their hair involves regular hair color treatments and touch-ups at the salon. While there are plenty of hair salons around, an at-home hair subscription like Madison Reed is a great option if you want the freedom of coloring your hair in your own space and on your own time. They send a hair coloring kit tailored to your specific hair goals, hair type, and any hair concerns you may have, so you can cover gray hairs or just try something new for your hair.

You don’t need to schedule a salon appointment because Madison Reed can deliver what you need right to your doorstep. They also give you access to a licensed colorist to answer your questions and give you application tips so you can apply the color easily. It’s a great experience to color your own hair and, at the same time, save you bucks in the process compared to what you pay in the salon.

I’ve tried Madison Reed many times before, and I’m happy with what it can do to hide my gray hair. To learn more, continue scrolling down and read our review.

My Madison Reed Review

You can use the color translator tool to help pick a color based on the one that you already use. I decided I wanted hints of Mahogany for fall, and was matched with Catania Brown!

I always appreciate all the little thoughtful extras they provide – cap, gloves, barrier cream, and a cleansing wipe! I really liked the gloves – instead of huge gloves that basically amount to plastic bags, they are actual gloves that fit me. They made it so much easier to actually do everything. It makes me feel so chic to have the black gloves too – no seeing that messy dye!

The process is really easy. You pierce the foil seal to the blue tube with the cap, and squeeze it all in the bottle, which has a lovely screw-off tip. Details like this are important to me. I don’t like having to break off the tip and I don’t like the possibility of it going everywhere if my fingers slip – that’s what you get with drugstore home hair color, but not with Madison Reed. So after you’ve mixed, all you need to do is suit up and apply the colorant to your hair. It sticks really well and doesn’t smell terrible.

I think the color is pretty accurate to the photos on their website. As always, when I use this product my hair is shiny and smooth (with fine flyaway hair like mine, you often see a huge improvement in your hair when you color it). I love not having that ashy brown color that’s my natural hair color, but has never ever once felt like my own! And I’m really happy that those grays are gone!

As busy as I am, I love having the convenience and flexibility of coloring my hair at home! I have personally tested out all of the Madison Reed products and am happy with all of them, plus they all smell so good. I have some of the color reviving gloss which I can use to amp up the color in between permanent coloring sessions.

Let’s also take a look at Madison Reed Styling Tools:

Madison Reed Nourishing Color Enhancing Shampoo & Conditioner ($44 on auto-delivery) is a sulfate-free, gluten-free, and paraben-free hair care combination. It can help maintain hair color while nourishing it at the same time! How awesome is that? Ingredients include keratin, argan oil, and ginseng root extract.

I have used this on and off for a year or two (I think 2!) since they’ve introduced it. It’s my go-to for soothing a stressed-out scalp – I try out a lot of products and this is one of my favorites, especially for healing from any harshness that new products may bring (I have a super sensitive scalp!). It also has an amazing scent and makes my hair soft and shiny. Even though I received these particular bottles for review, I have purchased multiple bottles on my own and it is a regular purchase for me!

I also have the Madison Reed Style ($24 on auto-delivery), a lightweight styling cream. It should be used while the hair is still damp, from root to tip. It makes hair soft and manageable, and it’s sulfate-free too! If you frequently use heat styling tools, you won’t have to worry about hair damage because it has Mongongo Oil that serves as the hair’s protection. I don’t frequently heat style but I do sometimes grab this and work into my hair while it’s damp before I go to bed, and the style is great in the morning!

Frizzy hair is one of the most common enemies of women and Madison Reed Tame ($23 on auto-delivery) can help solve that problem! The formula is lightweight and, thanks to argan oil, it adds shine to the hair without weighing it down. You can use this as a hair primer as well. This is a smaller bottle but you only need a teensy, weensy bit to cover even thick luxurious hair (which mine is not). You can also use this to smooth down styled hair.

Madison Reed Professional Comb ($10) is easy grip, with non-snagging teeth that are gentle on the scalp and also eliminate static electricity – what more can you ask for in a comb? Even though it’s not necessary for my fine hair, the large tooth at the end is totally awesome for parting thick, curly hair. It is made from durable and heat-resistant material and combs through the hair effortlessly.

Is Madison Reed Worth It?

I’m more than happy with my hair when I’m using Madison Reed! They don’t use resorcinol in their hair dye, and their other products are equally gentle on my hair and scalp. Despite not using harsh ingredients that some other companies use, their styling products still manage to make my hair look great, which is fantastic! I can pretty much do anything at home with Madison Reed, whether it’s coloring, hiding gray hairs, or styling. They deliver everything in the mail as well, so I no longer need to schedule appointments at the hair salon or run to the nearest retail store that carries hair products.

Madison Reed makes it so easy to take care of our hair and achieve our hair goals. The color quiz even takes into consideration your current hair color and any other hair issues you have. There’s also a chance to book a video consultation with their licensed colorists to help you decide on a color, learn application tips, and more!
