0-2 Years Old
The Little Feminist Book Club October 2022 book selection for 0 to 2-years-olds includes Sonrisas For Baby: A Little Book of Smiles by Jen Arena and Diwali Lights by Rina Singh. Both of these books will help broaden kids’ vocabulary and cultural knowledge!
The information card contains a letter from the Little Feminist team. It briefly discusses the book choices and why they’ve chosen to feature them. One book is to shed some light on Indian culture through the eyes of a young child, while the other is a bilingual book that highlights simple Spanish and English vocabulary terms.
On the flip side are nine “acts of kindness” that young learners can simply do to share love and light with family and friends.
Kindness is contagious, so spread some love and light, and see just how far it goes.
Since the book picks are focused on celebration and kindness, there are two other cards explaining what these key terms are. The back side of each card contains discussion questions about the story. Parents can ask the listed questions to their kids after reading the books.
Sonrisas For Baby: A Little Book of Smiles by Jen Arena ($7.99) is an educational language book. This board book has simple English and Spanish words, as well as colorful and engaging illustrations. At the end of the book, compiled are the key terms worth remembering, like sonrisas or smiles, amigo or friend, bebe or baby, and more! I guess I’ll be hearing and seeing a lot of sonrisas from my youngest since she enjoyed repeating every single word after me.
Diwali Lights by Rina Singh ($9.95) is the next book in the box, which features the festival of lights in India! Diwali Lights is known to be one of the biggest and brightest of all Indian festivals. The story simply explains what Diwali Lights is from the point of view of children. Instead of using illustrations, the book is filled with pictures of real kids during the celebration. There were also rhymes in the story that make it fun to read aloud.
Little Feminist Book Club’s featured books for the month are great introductions to the Spanish language and Indian culture. One has bright and playful illustrations, while the other shows pictures of how kids in India celebrate a festival. Both books are fun to read aloud, and young bookworms can flip through pages easily. 2-4 Years Old
Next up is the Little Feminist Book Club October 2022 book choice for 2 to 4-year-olds! It’s Amira’s Picture Day by Reem Faruqi, which tells a story of how the protagonist resolved the occurrence of Eid and picture day at school on the same day.
Each month, the book box includes a parent’s letter. It briefly discusses what the book pick for the month is all about and laid out some reasons why they featured it. Little Feminist team also recommends slowing it down for young bookworms, so they can wander through why certain things happen and encourage sympathy as well. The flip side of the letter card is where the activity is. This month, the activity is called Celebrating Us: Picture Day Art. Children are encouraged to draw their Picture Day portrait using the prompts listed.
Also included is a bookmark printed with discussion questions. Parents may ask these questions to the kids after reading the story to further explore the topic.
Amira’s Picture Day by Reem Faruqi ($11.36) is a book focused on Muslim traditions and culture. The story is about how Amira, the lovely young protagonist, made her way to picture day alongside the celebration of Eid. This book is filled with colorful drawings, which make the whole reading experience more fun and exciting for kids. Also, the celebration of the Muslim holiday is perfectly depicted in the story. Although Amira was feeling sad thinking she won’t be able to make it to picture day, a brilliant idea struck her mind and then, she made it! Overall, it’s a fun and educational read, highlighting a culture different than ours while promoting the power of empathy to all. It ended well with her classmates giving positive feedback about how lovely her dress is, how beautiful her hands are, and how she looks like a princess!
My kids liked this month’s featured book! It was so fun to read, especially with Amira’s swinging of mood, from happy to sad to excited to worried to feeling accomplished. My kids also learned so many things about Muslim culture, like how the moon tells them that it’s the day of Eid, the clothes they wear, what masjids are, the mendhi designs on their hands, and more! It’s definitely a book worth adding to my kids’ diverse home library. Little Feminist Book Club is the subscription to go for diverse books with topics about kindness, empathy, and the like!
4-7 Years Old
Little Feminist Book Club never fails to send fun, age-appropriate, and diverse books for kids. The October 2022 book pick for children ages 4-7 was Together We Ride by Valerie Bolling. It’s a wonderful book for young readers, embedded with messages of pride, patience, and perseverance.
Like the other boxes, this one came with a parent’s letter from the Little Feminist team. It quickly describes what the featured book is all about and the reasons they chose it. They hope that this book will lead to meaningful conversations about how you can achieve what you set your heart to, especially with undying support from loved ones.
Likewise, the flip card shows the activity related to the book, and this time, it’s Words of Affirmation card making. There are eight cards total, so kids can freely create and write words of affirmation to build self-confidence and self-esteem. They can cut and color these cards however they like and send them to friends and family who need some encouragement. There’s also a bookmark with discussion questions that parents can ask their kids after reading the story.
Together We Ride by Valerie Bolling ($14.49) is a cute story of a father-daughter tandem and it revolves around a relatable family moment. It suggests that parents are the kind of support that children need in everything they do. The little girl in the story took the challenge to ride a bike and earn a new skill. Although there were humps and hurdles along the way, with the family beside her, she was determined to push through it! The book is also packed with short word rhymes that simply convey the character’s actions. Even though there’s not much text, the illustrations in the entire book were enough to tell the narrative. Kids can be as imaginative as they can and create dialogues as well. The book is quick to read and yet leaves a message or two about patience and perseverance with support from family.
It’s another great book to add to our home library! My kids took pleasure in turning the pages and they also enjoyed the illustrations that show how the brave little girl stood up and rode her bike again until she succeeded. The story also proves that no matter who you are, as long as you have the willpower and support from loved ones, you can achieve anything. The activity with words of affirmation is also a great addition to the box. Overall, this book subscription is one of the best choices for building a home library filled with diverse books!
