My Second Nature Review

It’s time for spring cleaning and whoops, I completely forgot to change my air filter again. It should be at the top of my list, but I always seem to forget! It’s especially difficult to remember because my filter only needs to be changed once a year.

We all know how important it is to regularly change our air filters at home but it’s really a tedious task. Second Nature makes the job of maintaining the HVAC system in our home a lot easier. They are a subscription service that deliver air filters and fridge filters monthly or whenever you want since you can customize the delivery schedule. I got the Aprilaire 413, which offers everything that I need for my house. If you don’t have this style filter, it’s okay – they have the regular square filters and fridge filters too!

The Aprilaire 413 filter reduces odors from cooking, pets, or VOCs. Second Nature also offers three different filtration levels: MERV 8, MERV 10, and MERV 13. Mine is MERV 13, also known as Health Shield, which is the best filter type. It can catch all the particles from pollen, dust, mold, mites, bacteria, pet dander, cooking oil, viruses, and even smog and smoke.

For those who are not familiar with MERV ratings, Second Nature explained it on their website:

MERV ratings were established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in order to aid consumers understanding of what type of air filter will best fit their home’s needs.

MERV is the worldwide standard rating system for air quality. The MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, tells the consumer how effectively a filter can catch household contaminants such as dust, pollen, and pet dander. The higher the MERV rating (anywhere from 1 to 16), the more and smaller particles are filtered from the air.

This is the old and dirty filter that definitely needs replacement. I was months overdue for replacing mine because I simply forgot, which can destroy a very expensive system. I have a 3-floor zoned HVAC system, 6 family members (one with serious allergies), and 2 dogs. It catches a lot of filth, and it was definitely time for a replacement! About 3 months overdue!

Aprilaire filters are quite expensive, and you need to replace them less frequently compared to regular filters. It’s harder to build a habit because you’re not doing it every month, so it’s nice to have an air filter subscription like Second Nature, which will remind you to replace your air filters when needed. You can even choose how frequently they are delivered: every 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, or on a custom schedule.

Subscribing to Second Nature is very easy. First, you just need to choose the exact filters you prefer. When it comes to the quantity, you can choose to have the exact amount of filters your home has. One of the confusing parts of maintaining home air filters is choosing the accurate size of an air filter replacement. Second Nature can accommodate you in choosing the right sizes that you need and they have every standard air filter size. Quite honestly, I was really surprised to find that the Second Nature filter is a genuine OEM Aprilaire filter! I thought it was going to be Aprilaire style: a little budget-friendlier, with the same performance. Nope! It’s the real deal, just on a subscription!

If you’re wondering how to determine what model of air filter you need, simply pull your Aprilaire out of the box (my husband is shown above installing the new filter), and it says right on top! No measuring is needed for this style filter.

Is Second Nature Worth It?

If you are thinking about leveling up your home, you can start with your air filters. There are so many positive outcomes in paying attention to them. The Second Nature subscription saves you time from going to a home improvement store as well as money from the costly repairs to your HVAC. Changing air filters regularly is also a great way to reduce energy usage! Of course, because of the high-quality and genuine Aprilaire air filters, you can also rest easy knowing that your indoor air quality at home is good. After all, if there is one place where we should feel confident about the quality of our air, it should be our own homes.
