Every box they send for children ages 7-9 always includes a bookmark with discussion questions about the book. This time, there are six questions that parents can ask their kids after reading the story.

Of course, there’s also a welcome letter included in the box. The letter explains the concept of the book pick for the month and states why they chose the featured story. On the flip side of the letter is the hands-on activity in relation to the story. It’s called Play Dough Bakery, and it requires ingredients you most likely have at home, like salt, flour, vegetable oil, food coloring, boiling water, and cream of tartar. It’s an ideal activity to create bonding moments for the whole family.

Dad Bakes by Katie Yamasaki ($13.88) is the book pick for this month’s box. My kids were eager to read it because the cover illustration looked so interesting! The story is about a father-daughter duo, and it tackles gender and societal stereotypes, as well as the importance of waiting and patience. The entire book is filled with colorful images that depict the father and his daughter’s daily routine. The texts are simple, and the storyline is easily understood by children, including those under seven years old. It’s a story of parenthood and childhood and how there are many things to do while waiting and baking.

My kids enjoyed flipping the pages of this month’s featured book! Every turn showed beautiful drawings about the daily life of the father and daughter duo, including the community they live in. It’s a simple, yet beautiful story that captures a parent-child relationship and their love for baking. It also shows that baking is for everyone – no matter what gender! The box also included a hands-on activity that’s perfect for developing not only sensory skills, but the practice of patience as well. Overall, this subscription succeeds in its goal of providing diverse book choices for young readers and it even helps create a lot of fun for children and their families!
