The parent letter introduces the book choices for the month and briefly explains why they chose the featured books. There are also two discussion question cards in the box for each book. One is about Close and Far while the other card is about Pronouns.
The first book pick for this month is Cerca Close by Juan Felipe Herrera ($7.99). It’s a dual language board book in Spanish and English that teaches kids the concept of closeness or spatial awareness. This cute book is a counterpart of Lejos/Far, which is the opposite of Cerca/Close. It’s short and simple, with vibrant illustrations that young readers love.
Another interesting book in the box is The Pronoun Book by Chris Ayala-Kronos ($8.99). It is centered around the idea of the proper use of pronouns. It’s filled with colorful illustrations of diverse people, making it easy for kids to learn various pronouns based on gender identity. This book serves as a starting point for children to understand what pronouns to use. It also encourages young learners to ask to find out someone’s pronouns!
To further kids’ knowledge about pronouns, there’s an activity called Pronoun Play. Through this, they’ll be able to use the right pronouns. There are 4 tags on the card that need to be cut out: They/Their, She/Her, Ze/Hir, and He/Him. It’s a great activity for little ones to practice using pronouns aside from calling someone’s name.
The books in the box are perfect for introducing children to the idea of closeness and identifying someone through the proper use of pronouns. Both books have colorful images that grab toddlers’ and preschoolers’ attention and pique their curiosity about learning new things. There are even discussion questions that help expand the topic and further their knowledge. And lastly, there’s an activity relating to the books as well! Overall, this month’s box is educational at best. It’s also an easy way for parents to build a diverse home library for their kids!
