Books & Music: Young Adult
If you’re the type of reader who loves mythology, gods, and goddesses, then Blood Scion by Deborah Falaye ($15.88) is totally for you! This book tells the journey of Sloane, who hides her abilities at first but eventually discovers new ways to prove herself. This Yoruba-Nigerian -mythology-inspired novel is a fiery tale of ancient magic, survival, and vengeance (a fair mix of fantasy and action). The story is fast-paced and heart-thumping, and the whole narrative makes you want to root for Sloane all through the end! It’s a powerful tale with enough twists, and I couldn’t put the book down.
Each book comes with a book club guide. It features info about the author, Deborah Falaye, the cast of characters in the story, discussion questions, a recipe for Egusi Soup, and a crossword puzzle for some entertainment!
The cover looks great with the heroine featured! Although this is a YA book, you may want to guide your young adults while reading it. There are some rough elements in the story that are more geared toward adults than YA.
Books & Music: Fiction
This month’s fiction book pick is Like A Sister by Kellye Garrett ($24.17). This mystery/thriller tale focuses on Lena Scott, who’s on her way to finding the truth about her celebrity half-sister Desirre Pierce’s death. Determined to give justice to Desiree’s death, Lena strongly and willfully investigates what really happened. This story is suspenseful and compelling with a bit of humor and tells the tale of family love, friendship, and social media fame. It’s packed with twists and turns that’ll keep you flipping pages until the very end!
The book club guide contains information about the book’s author, Kellye Garrett. It also features the cast of characters, discussion questions, a QR code for the playlist, a word search puzzle, and a Breakfast Grits recipe you can recreate at home.
The story’s female protagonist is strong, and that’s one of the reasons why it’s definitely worth a read! Although a bit slow from the start, the story got better as it progressed.
The books I received this month feature strong Women Of Color! I enjoyed reading both of the stories since they were character-driven and page-turners. The YA novel took inspiration from Yoruba-Nigerian mythology, while the fiction book contains elements of murder and mystery. Books & Music box made it more entertaining for readers with a Spotify playlist to listen to and a recipe to make at home. If you want to delve into reading more, Now in Books is an ideal subscription!
