We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza ($16.08) This contemporary fiction novel is about how a tragic event affects the relationship between two close friends, Jen and Riley. It’s a good conversation starter as it tackles relatable, real-world issues including racism and justice. The story was told in alternating perspectives, which makes it much simpler for readers to connect with the characters and get into the mood of the story. It’s a heartfelt and evocative tale about race, friendship, and forgiveness, and I enjoyed reading every page. Along with this book is a signed bookplate from the author.

Pillowcase. When you get to page 116, you can open the first gift in the box. It’s a plaid pillowcase, which matches the comforter on Justin’s bed, the black boy victim.

Tamara, the mother, then grabbed the pillow and held it close to her face. With this gift, you can picture what she may have felt like in her son’s bedroom.

Ultrasound. Upon reaching pages 134 and 135, you’ll see a sonogram. The details on this one make it look like the real thing. This part of the book is where Kevin’s (Jen’s husband) family knew the gender of the soon-to-be-born baby.

Flowers. I always find it amazing how Once Upon A Book Club presents each gift. This one comes in a drawstring pouch with a huge print of the page number!

Kevin Murphy sent Tamara a blue vase with flowers, along with a letter. This present is OK for a table centerpiece, bathroom accent, or windowsill! Also, this part of the book can easily make one teary-eyed as Kevin is willing to tell what happened then and how sorry he was.

I admit, I was not super impressed with opening the gifts until this point, but I suspected there was something good coming!

Pearl Bracelet. Towards the end of the story, there’s still one last gift to be opened. It was wrapped nicely in a red box and tied with a yellow ribbon indicating the page number.

Inside is an 18k gold plated bracelet with freshwater pearls by Gigi’s!

It also comes with a letter to have readers dive deeper into their emotions.

It looks so gorgeous having all those shiny pearls, gold beads, and chains! With its sophisticated, elegant style, I can pair it with any formal outfit!

Once Upon a Book Club never disappoints with its book choices! For this month, I received an engaging book with a focus on racism, justice, and friendship. I enjoyed reading it, as well as opening the gifts upon reaching certain pages. Some of the gifts are pretty useful like the pillowcase, vase, and gold-plated bracelet. It was also a great idea to add physical copies of the letters, a great way to grasp the characters’ emotions deeper!

Each themed box comes with a book club kit plus a bookmark, quote print, and signed bookplate. Check them out here:
