Book of the Month had a great selection of books for December 2021, from genres such as magical realism, thriller, romance, and memoir. My pick is the magical realism novel, entitled A History of Wild Places by Shea Earnshaw!

Also included in the review are 3 add-ons, making it a total of 4 awesome books in one box.

Our selection for December 2021 is A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw ($21.99)! A combination of mystery, fantasy, and thriller, the story first follows Travis Wren who has an unusual talent for locating missing people. He eventually went missing after taking on a certain case. Then, the perspective shifts to Theo’s story who lives in a reclusive community. He’s the one who discovers Travis’ abandoned truck. I had so many questions while reading and most of them were answered, so I’m quite satisfied!

The author’s atmospheric storytelling style is impeccable. Reading through this novel is like discovering something hidden deep in the dark woods, which is really haunting.

The next books are add-ons!

The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green ($16.80) is a non-fiction book, a collection of personal essays by the well-known author. This is way different from his best-selling YA novels but definitely worth reading for his take on the shared human experience – covering a wide range of topics from whispering to sunsets and everything in between. If you’re looking for an entertaining and educational read, this is it!

The next add-on in our box is The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Córdova ($18.30), which was also included in the August 2021 Book of the Month selection. It’s a multi-generational fantasy novel that highlights South American magical realism. The story shifts from the present to the past, telling us the story of Montoya family’s matriarch and the decisions that impacted her and her family’s life. It was dreamy and magical!

Another add-on is The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah ($14), a historical fiction novel that was a part of the February 2021 Book of The Month selection. Set in the 1930s, the story focuses on a woman named Elsa Martinelli and her daughter as they try to survive the Dust Bowl era of Texas. It’s a heart-wrenching and tear-jerking tale for sure. I got this book for free as a member perk – I was able to select one of the 5 finalists for book of the year.

I’m loving the variety of books in my box this month, from my December 2021 pick to the add-ons. The magical realism novel was so hard to put down. It was intriguing, and I couldn’t wait to find out what happens next so I kept turning the pages. John Green’s first non-fiction work didn’t disappoint either. It’s worthy of a read, as it’s entertaining and educational at the same time! The rest of the books are also amazing reads worthy of adding to a personal book collection.

Overall, Book of the Month is a great subscription for book lovers, especially if you want to be able to choose the book you will receive every month. If one book isn’t enough, the good news is that you can always grab add-ons!

I had read The Four Winds when it was originally offered as one of the monthly selections, and I’m not really sure what prompted me to choose it, because I usually go for the thriller genre, but I’m glad I did. I breezed through this book because I just couldn’t put it down. I could say that it’s my favorite book that I’ve ever read from my 5 years as a member
