The adventure continues with Crate Expectations! For October 2021, the book subscription box for kids is centered around the theme Recipe for Success. It teaches kids all about food and different tastes, with a heartwarming story on top (and some actual snacks)!

Tradition has never been tastier when a cooking competition and a secret promise mix things up in this heartwarming graphic novel about finding your way and chasing your dreams.

Book Club Pick of the Month

The featured book is a graphic novel written by Lily LaMotte and illustrated by Ann Xu, entitled Measuring Up ($11.49)! It’s a middle grade realistic fiction with a focus on food, strong family ties, and the immigrant experience in America. The protagonist is a girl named Cici who moved from Taiwan to Seattle. This is a good read for anyone who loves stories centered on cooking or cooking competitions!

Book-related STEM Activity and Supplies

Here’s an interesting STEM activity for kids! Called Taste Test, it teaches kids all about the science of taste. The supplies provided include jelly beans and a taste test chart, while supplies needed from home are a pen or pencil, a blindfold (optional), and a glass of water. Grownup help is needed for this activity!

Other supplies included in the box are measuring spoons shaped like hearts, bite-sized caramel apple cookies to accompany the kids while reading this month’s book, and a game called Just Desserts.

This month’s curation was indeed a recipe for success! It included a nice book about a girl who tries to fit in a new environment using a recipe inspired by her grandmother, plus book related items that are also about food. The measuring spoons and cookies were good additions to the box but what my kids loved the most is the Just Desserts game. Overall, it was another excellent box for young bookworms and it makes them feel like a part of a book club!
