The October 2021 Fiction theme is Ties that Bind!

This month’s authors are Christine Pride and Jo Piazza. There’s a short feature about them in the guide, as well as a list of the characters along with a short description for each.

Here’s this month’s mood tunes! It’s the curated playlist that matches this month’s book and theme. There’s also a streaming guide that features titles from some Podcasts, HBO, and Netflix. They also included discussion questions on the next page!

They even shared a recipe for Loaded Bacon Cheddar Bread! On the page beside it is a word search puzzle.

We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza ($22.99)

Told from alternating perspectives, an evocative and riveting novel about the lifelong bond between two women, one Black and one white, whose friendship is indelibly altered by a tragic event—a powerful and poignant exploration of race in America today and its devastating impact on ordinary lives.

Jen and Riley have been best friends since kindergarten. As adults, they remain as close as sisters, though their lives have taken different directions. Jen married young, and after years of trying, is finally pregnant. Riley pursued her childhood dream of becoming a television journalist and is poised to become one of the first Black female anchors of the top news channel in their hometown of Philadelphia.

But the deep bond they share is severely tested when Jen’s husband, a city police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. Six months pregnant, Jen is in freefall as her future, her husband’s freedom, and her friendship with Riley are thrown into uncertainty. Covering this career-making story, Riley wrestles with the implications of this tragic incident for her Black community, her ambitions, and her relationship with her lifelong friend.

Like Tayari Jones’s An American Marriage and Jodi Picoult’s Small Great ThingsWe Are Not Like Them explores complex questions of race and how they pervade and shape our most intimate spaces in a deeply divided world. But at its heart, it’s a story of enduring friendship—a love that defies the odds even as it faces its most difficult challenges.

I love the vibrant colors on the book cover. At the back of the book are reviews from different authors!

This book tackles interracial friendships, and it’s a well-written one. It’s such a powerful and emotional journey! I also like that the story is alternately narrated by two lovely women so we can really get a better understanding of the things that they are going through. There’s a lot to unpack from this one book and it’s truly a remarkable read!

I love this month’s title! It perfectly fits the theme Ties That Bind. The book also talks about racism, police culture, and a whole lot of other things that each person experiences differently and I think it’s a great way to share awareness of the situation. Since this is a Book and Music box, I also received a guide and a playlist that made reading a more immersive experience!
