I think the wording is off, not explained the best and it does seem like you’re paying an extra fee.
From looking at it online, it’s from an Ipsy seller who creates her own products. I’m assuming the pre-order price is so she can buy enough materials to make these pieces. As I small business owner I can see why she’d do it this way so at least she’s not out the material costs.
Though I wish she would post a couple spoilers so people can see what they might be getting and have a purchase now option for people who don’t require a deposit. I’m also unclear if you get items or if this just the material to make your own stuff.
Hi Stephanie – thanks for the feedback. I updated this post slightly to make it clear that this box is for quilters (they use fat quarters – a specific type of cut – when quilting). I’m not sure about Etsy. FQS is one of the largest and most popular quilting shops around and has been in business for over 15 years and now offers a variety of subscriptions (and one time seasonal boxes around the holidays!). -Brandy
Hi Brandy- ahhhh, I’m not a quilter so I just learned a new term, fat quarters. Thanks! A quilter would have understood this post. Makes total sense now. I did a quick internet search as I love all things Halloween and I was directed to an Etsy shop. Maybe they sell there too or maybe I’m just wrong.

I think charging the full price immediately is far more preferable than splitting it and making it look like they are hitting you with an extra fee. Even if it shakes out the same in the end, it feels icky. Just charge $33 + shipping like a normal box.
What the F is a reservation fee for a sub box and why would they ask you to pay such a thing?…..easy pass on that scam fee.
Hi Pam – this is just how FQS charges for their boxes. They take the reservation fee now and charge the rest when the box is shipped. It’s not a subscription (limited edition box). I guess they prefer doing that over charging the full price immediately. -Brandy
Could be their way of making sure they have the proper quantities to fulfill all of the orders. But we don’t know since we don’t run their business. Just because their payment process is split doesn’t make it a scam lmao
