The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris ($13.50)

Urgent, propulsive, and sharp as a knife, The Other Black Girl is an electric debut about the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishing.

Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she’s thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust.

Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: LEAVE WAGNER. NOW.

It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realizes that there’s a lot more at stake than just her career.

A whip-smart and dynamic thriller and sly social commentary that is perfect for anyone who has ever felt manipulated, threatened, or overlooked in the workplace, The Other Black Girl will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last twist.

At the back of the book, there are short reviews from other authors.

This is the author’s debut novel, a mystery/thriller set in New York at a fictional company called Wagner Books.

The story follows Nella, an editorial assistant and the only Black employee at Wagner. She was thrilled when another Black woman was hired in the same position, but things didn’t turn out as she expected. The author has a good storytelling style which gradually built up the tension in the story.

This is more than just an office drama. It was also filled with unexpected twists until the end!

I love the diverse reads from Now In Books! This month’s featured title, The Other Black Girl, exceeded my expectations and kept me thrilled until the very end. The storytelling style is just brilliant and powerful. I also appreciate the inclusion of the guide and the playlist, which helped enhance my reading experience overall. If you’re looking for YA or fiction books with diverse characters, this subscription is a great way to get them delivered to your door. The Books and Music box offers a book club-like experience, but you can also opt for a book-only subscription!
