This month’s theme is FUN WITH FLIGHT! Kiwi Crate includes all the necessary supplies for the featured activities, plus explore! magazine.

“Take a look around. What do you see that flies?”

Explore! Magazine

An issue of explore magazine is included in every Crate. It is full of fun content that brings the project to life. explore! has read, draw, learn, explore, eat, and make designated activities. There is really a lot to look at and read – a comic, puzzles, and games – and it really extends your young one’s engagement with the Crate. Each expands on the theme of the box, whether through factoids, drawing activities, or recipes, but the variation is helpful for engaging different learning styles and interests. There is always a comic featuring Steve the Kiwi and his pals. My kids love reading the stories and illustrations featured on the magazine. This magazine includes a lot of historical and scientific information related to the current theme. This month, it’s all about things that fly! My daughter joined in on the fun. She loved learning about the airplanes! Here’s an article about rockets! It has a list of the rocket’s parts and how each of them help make a rocket soar up in the sky! There’s also a suggested activity about making a helicopter using scissors, copy paper, and paper clip from home. The booklet even introduced a unique recipe that is closely related to this month’s theme, the hot air balloon muffins! Here are more fun DIY activities that are related to this month’s theme! As always, detailed instruction with illustrations are provided for every activity. Making a paper plane was an easy task for my son! He had so much fun playing with his DIY airplane!

Kiwi Crate Activities

The second booklet that comes in every crate is the actual instruction booklet for the crafts, and it often includes additional activities beyond the extension projects included in explore! Every Kiwi Crate comes with a unique sticker (like your merit badge for completing the box). The first box of an annual subscription includes a poster for displaying your earned stickers. The booklet contains a list of all the supplies they provided for the crafts. It also has a rating of messiness and parental involvement for each activity. Here are all the items for this month’s Fun with flight projects! The first activity is building a rocket launcher and a rocket! The materials provided for this activity are wood leg pieces, woo U pieces, dowel, launcher base, pump, foam connector, launcher tube, and rubber rings. My son started by assembling the launcher base. To make it more stable, my daughter helped in attaching the wood leg pieces to the launcher base. Next up is placing the wood U piece to the launcher’s body. The holes on the wood U piece must be aligned with the rainbow colored circles. It must be properly placed because even the smallest mistakes can cause a major problem in launching our rocket! After building the launcher, a few more parts need to be installed for a successful rocket launch! After preparing the launcher, it’s now time to make the rocket itself! For the rocket, this crate provided wide straws, foam rocket tips, rocket fins, and rocket stickers! My son made sure that the rocket fins are properly folded for better acceleration and navigation. Just like any other experiment, my son checked everything thoroughly first to make sure it works smoothly and according to plan. 3… 2… 1… Blast off! The rocket launcher works! My kids were amazed with how the rockets took off! Building this rocket launcher was so fun and exciting, and the good thing is that it can be reused! For the second activity, my kids made their own kite! The crate provided kites, markers, clear stickers, straws, kite tails, and string for this activity. The booklet contains detailed step-by-step instructions, accompanied with illustrations. Using colored markers, my son made a unique design for his kite! My daughter also colored some parts of the kite! This is such a fun way to bond! Just like the airplane, some parts of the kite needs to be folded to make an aerodynamic shape. Lastly, the colorful tails were secured in place. My son ran as fast as he could to help it fly. Later that weekend we got enough breeze to loft the kite in the wind, which was awesome! It was a challenging task but my older son was determined to make the kite fly! Here’s my daughter who gave kite flying a try as well! After a few tries, they were able to make the kite fly on its own! This was such a fun activity! Aside from helping kids get creative, it was also a good way to exercise their motor skills. It’s indeed a month full of fun with flight! My kids enjoyed the craft projects from Kiwi Crate this month! The flight theme was really interesting, and the booklet was able to explain how things fly in a way that kids easily understand. The materials are already provided and the instructions are easy to follow so my kids were able to accomplish everything without difficulties. They had a great time making the rockets and kites, but they loved putting them to the test more! Overall, it was another excellent and age-appropriate box.
