Ariadne: A Novel by Jennifer Saint ($20.18)

A mesmerizing debut novel for fans of Madeline Miller’s Circe.

Ariadne, Princess of Crete, grows up greeting the dawn from her beautiful dancing floor and listening to her nursemaid’s stories of gods and heroes. But beneath her golden palace echo the ever-present hoofbeats of her brother, the Minotaur, a monster who demands blood sacrifice.

When Theseus, Prince of Athens, arrives to vanquish the beast, Ariadne sees in his green eyes not a threat but an escape. Defying the gods, betraying her family and country, and risking everything for love, Ariadne helps Theseus kill the Minotaur. But will Ariadne’s decision ensure her happy ending? And what of Phaedra, the beloved younger sister she leaves behind?

Hypnotic, propulsive, and utterly transporting, Jennifer Saint’s Ariadne forges a new epic, one that puts the forgotten women of Greek mythology back at the heart of the story, as they strive for a better world.

The back of the book contains the words ‘sister”, “lover”, “traitor”, and “hero”, giving us an idea about the story’s protagonist. At the lower part, there’s the BOTM logo.

The inner flap of the book’s dust jacket contains a synopsis of the story.

I was expecting this book to be a retelling of the story involving the Minotaur and Theseus since she was an integral part of that story but I was surprised to find out that this book actually follows Ariadne’s entire life story. It showcases both Ariadne and her sister, Phaedra’s voice which is really lovely to read.

This book also focused on the women in Greek mythology and showed how they were punished for men’s actions and how they were able to survive situations they weren’t prepared for. I love how beautifully detailed the descriptions were and how you can really feel the characters’ emotions through the author’s words.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir ($18.04)

A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Martian.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission – and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian – while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

This book is an add-on. It has the BOTM logo at the back as well.

I have read Andy Weir’s The Martian and to be honest, the premise of this book is a lot like that, except in this book, the protagonist is tasked to save the world.

There are some illustrations included in the book as well.

This book has its own charm! I love how the author did a back and forth from the present to the past just to show the readers how things came to be.

To be honest, I wasn’t really big on Weir’s first book (the movie is way better, I’m not a huge fan of Weir’s style, but the story is great) but I enjoyed reading it! A few pages kept me on the edge of my seat and I love how it also showed how to fight for survival and the values of friendship. My husband was really pumped that I added this one on. It’s great to make the subscription stretch by feeding everyone’s reading needs!

I have two books in my Book of the Month May box and I’m really happy with both! One is about Greek mythology. I find it interesting because most Greek mythology books are written using the voice of gods and men, so reading Ariadne’s story written in her point of view is quite refreshing. The other book is a science fiction novel and I enjoyed it as well. If you’re having a hard time deciding on which books to read, you can try Book of the Month because this subscription can help you narrow down your search!
