Smack Dab In The Middle of Maybe by Jo Watson Hackl ($8.90)

Eleven days. Thirteen clues. And one kid who won’t give up. Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe is “part treasure hunt, part wilderness adventure, and all heart.”–Alan Gratz, New York Times Bestselling author of Refugee

How far would you go to find something that might not even exist?

All her life, Cricket’s mama has told her stories about a secret room painted by a mysterious artist. Now Mama’s run off, and Cricket thinks the room might be the answer to getting her to come back. If it exists. And if she can find it.

Cricket’s only clue is a coin from a grown-over ghost town in the woods. So with her daddy’s old guidebook and a coat full of snacks stolen from the Cash ‘n’ Carry, Cricket runs away to find the room. Surviving in the woods isn’t easy. While Cricket camps out in an old tree house and looks for clues, she meets the last resident of the ghost town, encounters a poetry-loving dog (who just might hold a key to part of the puzzle), and discovers that sometimes you have to get a little lost . . . to really find your way.

2019 Southern Book Award Winner–Children’s Category
2020-2021 Young Hoosier Book Award Nominee

This book has a colorful cover design. At the back, it also lists some great reviews from other authors.

The story revolves around Cricket’s desire to find the secret room from her mom’s stories. As she ventured into a ghost town trying to find clues, she eventually realized that sometimes being lost is the key to finding your way.

It was a fun book. There are also great lessons that readers can learn from it like determination, perseverance, patience, and more!

The Thrifty Guide to Ancient Rome A Handbook for Time Travelers by Jonathan W. Stokes ($14.12)

From the publishing house that brought you the Who Was? books comes the next big series to make history approachable, engaging, and funny!

The Thrifty Guide to Ancient Rome contains information vital to the sensible time traveler:

• Where can I find a decent hotel room in ancient Rome for under five sesterces a day? Is horse parking included?
• What do I do if I’m attacked by barbarians?
• What are my legal options if I’m fed to the lions at the Colosseum?

All this is answered and more. There is handy advice on finding the best picnicking spots to watch Julius Caesar’s assassination at the Roman Forum in 44 BC, as well as helpful real estate tips to profit from the great Roman fire of AD 64. There are even useful recommendations on which famous historical figures to meet for lunch, and a few nifty pointers on how to avoid being poisoned, beheaded, or torn apart by an angry mob.

If you had a time travel machine and could take a vacation anywhere in history, this is the only guidebook you would need!

A preview about the book and more titles are listed at the back cover.

This book tells the history of ancient Rome, but in a fun way! The reader is presumed to be a time traveler from the 21st century who is taking a vacation package to ancient Rome from Time Corps.

It’s filled with fun facts and characters, proving readers that history is not boring! There are also lots of illustrations on each page to tickle the reader’s imagination.

It’s another fun box filled with age-appropriate books for pre-teens! There’s a book with a dog as a main character, a touching story about a kid who won’t give up, and a book packed with history lessons about ancient Rome. My kids enjoyed them all and the titles are now added to their bedtime reading favorites! If you want to get new books for children, which are tailored for their age, BookCase.Club is a great idea because they offer subscriptions for various age levels from newborn to pre-teens!
