This is a review of the Sheila E. Teaches Drumming and Percussion class from MasterClass!

The MasterClass Instructor – Sheila E.

This class opens with an introduction to what you will learn throughout the class and a few defining moments in Sheila E.’s life that started her career as a professional musician. Sheila E. is a groundbreaking drummer and percussionist who grew up in Oakland, California. She got her first big break when she convinced her dad to let her sub in for an under-the-weather Azteca member and in that moment she knew this is exactly what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

Sheila fought the roadblock of industry misogyny, the wages of fame, and the physical limits of her own body to carve out a unique path through art, life, and pop culture. One constant, in the form of a simple phrase, has driven Sheila every step of the way: Follow the beat. And her impeccable inner rhythm is the pulse behind a trailblazing career that still knows no bounds

In this class, Sheila E. teaches the fundamentals of percussion and drumming by exploring rhythm, how to play beats, how to make loops, and how to perform with a band. She also takes the time to talk about what it takes to succeed in the music industry by talking about her own experiences while collaborating with Prince. Lastly she introduces viewers to the Escovedo family through a great section on Latin percussion.

MasterClass Drumming Percussion Key Takeaways

Sheila E. has created an exciting and inspiring class that really tackles the fundamentals of drumming and percussion, while also providing great insights into the music industry and Latin percussion. During this class, viewers work from the ground up by finding their rhythm through the use of household items to how to improvise and take a solo. She also talks about how to play with a band, what it takes to be a band leader, and how to train and condition your body to make you the best performer you can be.

If you want this to be your career, you really have to work hard—and I mean extremely hard. And when you think that it’s hard enough, then go even further. Do it for yourself and believe in yourself. You have to be strong. If you show that you’re willing to work and put in the hours, that’ll change the world.

What I really enjoyed about this class was the section on Latin percussion. Sheila E. uses the last section of her class to share where her musical journey started and the importance of family in her life. In this section, viewers get more insights to Sheila E.’s journey and some great fundamental techniques when playing the congas, timbales, and how to experiment with percussion.
