The Rules Of Magic by Alice Hoffman ($26.88)

**INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**

**REESE WITHERSPOON BOOK CLUB PICK**

From beloved author Alice Hoffman comes the spellbinding prequel to her bestseller, Practical Magic.

Find your magic.

For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1620, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man.

Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique. Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people’s thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk.

From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love. But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Back in New York City each begins a risky journey as they try to escape the family curse.

The Owens children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart. The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy. Thrilling and exquisite, real and fantastical, The Rules of Magic is a story about the power of love reminding us that the only remedy for being human is to be true to yourself.

I have an add-on book this month, and it’s from the BOTM November 2017 selection.

This novel has a combination of fantasy and paranormal elements.

The flap at the back features a short author’s bio.

This is a prequel to Practical Magic but it works as a stand-alone as well. If you love books related to witchery, this series makes a good read!

The story revolves around the Owens siblings, whose family is cursed. Anyone who falls in love with them will die. Aside from the compelling plot about the siblings Franny, Jet, and Vincent, I loved its great storytelling with excellent imagery.

Magic Lessons: The Prequel To Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman ($16.79)

In an unforgettable novel that traces a centuries-old curse to its source, beloved author Alice Hoffman unveils the story of Maria Owens, accused of witchcraft in Salem, and matriarch of a line of the amazing Owens women and men featured in Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic.

Where does the story of the Owens bloodline begin? With Maria Owens, in the 1600s, when she’s abandoned in a snowy field in rural England as a baby. Under the care of Hannah Owens, Maria learns about the “Unnamed Arts.” Hannah recognizes that Maria has a gift and she teaches the girl all she knows. It is here that she learns her first important lesson: Always love someone who will love you back.

When Maria is abandoned by the man who has declared his love for her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts. Here she invokes the curse that will haunt her family. And it’s here that she learns the rules of magic and the lesson that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Love is the only thing that matters.

Magic Lessons is a celebration of life and love and a showcase of Alice Hoffman’s masterful storytelling.

This book is from the October 2020 selection of BOTM, as indicated on the print at the back.

This is the latest book from the Practical Magic series!

This story focuses on Maria Owens, the matriarch of the cursed family, and shows us where the curse started.

It has the same elegant storytelling style as Rules of Magic and I loved it. It’s a great piece of historical fiction and the romance parts were also good!

Book of the Month is an excellent book subscription, especially for discerning bookworms. Their selections always include interesting books from both established and new authors, and I’m all for it. This month, I picked a fantasy novel that tells about how a curse started in a family of witches and wizards. Since it’s from a series, I also added the previous book in the series as an add-on. I totally enjoyed reading both!

What do you think of this month’s book selections?
