The MasterClass Instructor – David Axelrod and Karl Rove

This class opens with an introduction to how two unlikely friends met and how viewers can start their career in politics. David and Karl’s goal for this class is to inspire a new generation of inspired citizens to run campaigns to keep democracy alive. They also talk about how the best way to start your political career is to get involved by finding a campaign that speaks to you and find a way to help out!

David Axelrod and Karl Rove are both well known political consultants. David Axelrod was the chief strategist for the Barack Obama campaign, and after President Obama was elected, was appointed Senior Advisor to the President. Karl Rove was the Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush and Deputy Chief of Staff.

David and Karl have created an excellent class which provides great insights to the workings of a campaign and what roles are necessary to win an election. The class covers how to start a campaign, how to asses your candidate to create a message, opposition research, campaign planning, understanding the electorate and targeting voters, polling, public appearances, social media, slogans, debates, and so much more.

MasterClass Workbook – David Axelrod and Karl Rove

The workbook for this class is actually replaced with a Campaign Strategy Primer which provides everything you need to accompany the recorded lessons! The Campaign Strategy Primer has descriptions of all of the most common roles in a campaign, a campaign timeline, along with a glossary of important terms. As mentioned in the “Who is it for?” section, the workbook also has a great introduction that guides viewers on how to approach this class based on their goal, whether that be to run for office, run a campaign, to get involved as a volunteer, or just learn more about the United States’ political system.

MasterClass Campaign Strategy and Messaging Key Takeaways

There are so many strategies and different approaches to running a campaign or running for office, but this class really does provide viewers with a good fundamental understanding of how to run their own campaign. They have taken the time to guide viewers through the entire campaign process, whether it be working with a candidate to create a message or how to interpret polling numbers. This class also provides great perspectives on how to use social media to benefit the campaign, the ethical concerns of opposition research, budgeting and fundraising, and how to close out an election.

Our great experiment is one generation away from extinction unless the American people remain involved in our democracy, in our campaigns, in our elections, and in the choice of those people we have who lead our country and our government.

What I found really inspiring was David and Karl’s encouragement for viewers to get involved! They close this class by talking about how they hope this class has not only shined a light on how challenging, engaging, and rewarding campaigning can be, but also how important it is for the constituents to participate in government. Whether participation is volunteering in a campaign, running for office, running a campaign, or just voting, the constituents have to continue to be informed and get involved or else our democracy will not succeed.
