This class opens with an introduction to Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein and how they would answer the question, “What is advertising?”. Advertising is all about storytelling that is represented by a brand. In this class, Goodby and Silverstein plan to teach viewers how to create a creative advertising, otherwise known as art serving capitalism.

For those who are not familiar with Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein, they are advertising executives of Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GS&P). Goodby graduated from Harvard, where he wrote for the Harvard Lampoon. He then started advertising at J. Walter Thompson before moving to Ogilvy & Mather, where he met Silverstein. Silverstein graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City, and then worked for Rolling Stone, before landed an adverting job at Ogilvy & Mather.

Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein started Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GS&P) with Andy Berlin in 1983 and won their first award from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for the Mill Valley Film Festival. Jeff and Rich went on to win Lions across every award and brand category, bridging an unprecedented variety of styles. Their work has included advertising campaigns like “got milk?,” the Budweiser lizards, Hewlett-Packard’s “Invent,” the E*Trade chimpanzee, Polaroid’s “See what develops,” the NBA’s “I love this game,” Nike’s “Skateboarding,” and SEGA’s “SEGA!”

Goodby and Silverstein’s goal for this class is to teach viewers how to create a story around a product, while also creating something that viewers want to see. They want to teach viewers how to work with bands, how to tell a story in 30 seconds, writing, design, leadership, and how to make adverting that lives in popular culture.

What I found really interesting about this class was Goodby and Silverstein’s ability to teach through case studies. Viewers get to see how some of the more popular advertisements were made and how endings were changed for things like Cheetos, Doritos, E*TRADE, and Chevy. Viewers also get to see how Goodby and Silverstein highlight the importance of being socially aware and how they can use their advertising strategies to raise money for a good cause or just bring an important issue to light.

This class captured my attention from the very beginning! Goodby and Silverstein have created a great class full of important insights and great case studies. If you are looking for a class that will redefine your view of advertising and also prepare you to enter the industry, this is the class for you!
