This month, it’s the Solar System Expert badge!

There goes our Bubble Expert badge! We’re excited to fill this one up with expert badges like our first one!

This box’s theme is OUR  SOLAR SYSTEM.

The booklet provides essential information about the subscription and a variety of projects that you can work on. Here’s a brief article introducing our solar system!

As usual, the booklet is well-detailed and very informative.

It provides us with complete instructions and details for each and every project.

There’s a total of 4 projects for this month’s activity box! The other page even suggests books for supplemental reading: Space Encyclopedia by David A. Aguilar and Smart Kids Space by Roger Priddy.

Aside from the projects, the booklet also comes with a lot of cool on-page activities for your kids to enjoy!

Each project comes in separate plastic containers to avoid mixing of items.

Since this box is all about celestial bodies, they included a moon calendar sheet!

Study the phases of the moon with your very own moon calendar! Every night for 28 days, color in the shadow for each night of the moon’s cycle that you can see. Once complete, you will have a personal representation of the phases of the moon over a 4 week cycle.

There’s also an exclusive bookmark that features Canis Major constellation, also known as the “Great Dog”.

Project #1: Space Sand Kit. For the first project, we used space sand, plastic cups, a stick, and a cute alien figurine.

This project consists of different experiments to determine the behaviors of hydrophobic sand in a variety of instances. For the first part, we filled the plastic cups with water.

My son put a little bit of space sand in the water, then stirred it. We saw that the sand floated on the surface of the water!

For the next experiment, we put the sand in the water and then added a dish detergent. This caused some of the sand to descend at the bottom of the plastic cup, because it removed the “magic” hydrophobic coating.

Instead of detergent, we added cooking oil in the mixture and carefully observed the reaction of the sand on the water. The oil floats together with the sand – the oil is also hydrophobic!

Project #2: Planetarium Kit. The second project includes paper, recycled craft tube, flashlight pen, constellation stickers, rubber band, and push pin.

My son attached the constellation sticker in the middle of the paper square and wrote the name of the constellation on the corner part of the paper.

Then, he put the paper square on one end of the tube and secured it using the rubber band. He also poked a hole on the dots of the constellation using the push pin.

It’s ready! My son looked through the planetarium toward a flashlight to see the constellations. Other sources of bright light can also be used.

You can also put the opened flashlight inside the tube and point it on your wall, desk, or even ceiling to see a greater image of the featured constellation. It’s such a fun activity!

Project #3: Constellation Geoboard. For the third project, we used cork trivet, geoboard template, pins, and loom bands.

First, my kids cut the geoboard template and placed it on top of the cork trivet.

They picked the constellation they want and then planted the pins into the stars of the template.

They also connected the pins/stars of the constellations using the loom bands. Afterward, they placed the geoboard under the sun (other sources of bright light would work too) and then brought it inside the darkroom. The loom bands glowed in the dark!

Project #4: Sundial Kit. For the fourth project, we used a circle base, black and orange sticky foam stickers, straw, and straw base.

My son started by putting the orange base in the middle of the circle base. He poked the straw through it and then placed the sticker numbers at the end of each sun rays.

He also peeled off the orange sticky foam stickers and put them on the sun rays.

To try, we took our sundial outside at noontime and then placed it on the part of our backyard where it points at 12, left it there, and observed how the stick moves as the time passes by! So amazing!

This box’s theme is really amazing! It’s all about the solar system and my kids really enjoyed building their own planetarium, geoboard, and sundial. They also learned a lot about celestial bodies through the booklet. This is truly a fun and exciting way to introduce the kids to the solar system, which is really a broad subject and can truly be an enjoyable one! Green Kid Crafts does a great job of creating craft projects that also tackle STEAM concepts.
