Everything in my box!

Skullsworn by Brian Staveley ($17.99)

From the award-winning epic fantasy world of The Emperor’s Blades

Pyrre Lakatur is not, to her mind, an assassin, not a murderer—she is a priestess. At least, she will be once she passes her final trial.

The problem isn’t the killing. The problem, rather, is love. For to complete her trial, Pyrre has ten days to kill the seven people enumerated in an ancient song, including “the one who made your mind and body sing with love / who will not come again.”

Pyrre isn’t sure she’s ever been in love. And if she fails to find someone who can draw such passion from her, or fails to kill that someone, her order will give her to their god, the God of Death. Pyrre’s not afraid to die, but she hates to fail, and so, as her trial is set to begin, she returns to the city of her birth in the hope of finding love . . . and ending it on the edge of her sword.

This is the 4th book in the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne Stories, but it’s a standalone book and it’s just set in the same world as the previous books.

The flap of the dust jacket introduces us to the story. There are also photos of other books in the series.

The story is written from a first person perspective. It follows the story of Pyrre, a priestess, and it’s a mix of her current struggles plus some reminiscing of her youth.

It’s the first book that we read from the series and we’re impressed with the author’s world-building. The descriptions were vivid and emotions were well depicted. It was an engrossing fantasy tale that we didn’t expect to like!

The Man in the Tree by Sage Walker ($24.76)

With The Man in the Tree, Locus Award-winning author Sage Walker has given us a thrilling hard science fiction mystery that explores the intersection of law, justice, and human nature.

Humanity’s last hope of survival lies in space…but will we even get there?

Helt Borresen is an Incident Analyst. What that means is that aboard the seed ship Kybele, he is the closest thing that the organization has to a security officer. But he doesn’t think that it’ll be a big part of his job, as all the candidates have been carefully screened.

Why the need for a seed ship? Because our planet is toast and the colonists that leave our world are the best shot that we have for our species to continue.

Everything is set…and then someone is found hanging dead just weeks before the launch. Fear and paranoia spread as the death begins to look more and more like a murder. The authorities want the case settled quickly and quietly so as not to cause panic.

And Helt is the one to prevent a murderer from sabotaging the entire mission.

This book is perfect for fans of generation ship stories!

The flap of the dust jacket has the story synopsis.

Sci-fi elements were mixed with a murder mystery and it made such a thrilling read!

The author’s storytelling style is dynamic. There’s even a well-done love story weaved excellently into the narrative!

We’re pleased with this month’s fantasy/sci-fi books from BookCase.Club! One is an engrossing fantasy and the other is a sci-fi story that also involves a murder mystery. Both books were well-written, the respective authors surely did a great job of keeping the stories engaging until the last page. With this subscription, it’s easy to get our hands on fresh reads by some of the best authors around. Another great thing about it is that you can even choose the genre you like! It’s indeed an ideal subscription for bookworms!
