The theme for the April 2020 OwlCrate Jr. box is CABIN IN THE WOODS!

Inside, there’s a list of all the items in the box, as well as an interview with this month’s featured author Lauren Wolk.

Knowing what inspired the author to pen a story can help children understand the book better.

They also suggested some titles for further reading, especially if you love this month’s book:

On another page features 5th grader and Owl Crate Jr. reader, Ruirui. Aside from being an OwlCrate Jr. bookworm, her mom also does some stunning box art with past OwlCrate Jr. boxes. The next page is about the April Box Photo Challenge!

Everything in the April 2020 OwlCrate Jr. box!

Bookmark. The adorable bookmark features a quote from Laura Ingalls Wilder:

Some old fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.

It also has a green tassel. The cabin scene featured at the back is designed by illustrator and author Kelly Leigh Miller.

Badge. It’s an Arlo Finch-inspired pin!

The beautiful pin is laser-engraved on wood, and it features the beautiful mountains and trees under the bright sky!

It’s also magnetic, making it easier to attach to your bag or to display.

Pen. This wood-carved pen is simply amazing. Aside from using it to take notes or jot down thoughts, it’s a perfect decor for your desk.

It features an adorable dog carving on the other end!

Who needs a pen topper, when your pen is already carved with this dog? The details are amazing even though it’s really small in size, just imagine the effort the carver put into this amazing pen, it’s really commendable!

The cover art of the book, which is also the included card’s design, features different elements, but what really gets me in this art is the shadow of the pup!

The flip side has a note from the author.

Artprint. The art print features a nice quote from the author of this month’s featured book, Lauren Wolk:

Loneliness shared is loneliness halved.

Monthly Collectible Sticker. This month’s collectible sticker is designed by Chie Boyd and it features a beautiful cabin inhabited by cute foxes. There are even flowers and plants around their home!

There’s also a signed bookplate.

Echo Mountain by Lauren Wolk ($17.99)

The Newbery Honor–winning author of Wolf Hollow and Beyond the Bright Sea returns with the story of an unforgettable young heroine in Depression-era Maine.

“Brilliant.” –Lynda Mullaly Hunt, bestselling author of Fish in a Tree

When the Great Depression takes almost everything they own, Ellie’s family is forced to leave their home in town and start over in the untamed forests of nearby Echo Mountain. Ellie has found a welcome freedom, and a love of the natural world, in her new life on the mountain. But there is little
joy, even for Ellie, as her family struggles with the aftermath of an accident that has left her father in a coma. An accident unfairly blamed on Ellie.

Determined to help her father, Ellie will make her way to the top of the mountain in search of the healing secrets of a woman known only as “the hag.” But the hag, and the mountain, still have many untold stories left to reveal and, with them, a fresh chance at happiness.

Echo Mountain is celebration of finding your own path and becoming your truest self. Newbery Honor– and Scott O’Dell Award–winning author Lauren Wolk weaves a stunning tale of resilience, persistence, and friendship across three generations of families, set against the rough and ragged beauty of the mountain they all call home.

At the back of the book are some brief reviews made by other best-selling authors.

The inside flap of the dust jacket gave us a sneak peek on what the story is all about. It started by introducing us to the heroine and her family, and what had happened.

My daughter liked this piece of historical fiction, as well as the fact that there’s a dog in the story!

The story is filled with rich descriptions, making it such an enticing read. The main character, Ellie, is also quite admirable!

Roy Toy Log Building Set ($11.49) To make the “cabin experience” more fun, the box also included a toy log building set!

The set contains 37 pieces that will make up a small log cabin with one window and a door!

The kit comes with easy to follow instructions, and my daughter was able to build the log cabin in no time.

They gave us a sneak peek for the next box! The May 2020 theme is Elements and Alchemy!

There is powerful magic in the natural world, and we’re going to be exploring it next month! May’s book is all about an unexpected quest to return a mystical being to its proper home. This story is just right for fans of The Miraculous, Rules For Stealing Stars, and The Lost Girl.

My daughter enjoyed this month’s featured book! The theme made us think of cabin vacations where one can enjoy the serenity of the mountains and the beauty of nature. The log cabin toy is a nice inclusion. Building it is such a fun activity after reading a book and all of my kids enjoyed it. The story is pretty great, and my daughter really admires how strong Ellie is. Her determination is truly inspiring too. Next month’s theme sounds interesting as it says element and alchemy! We’re wondering what magic the featured book next month will bring!
