The Light-Keeper’s Daughters by Jean E. Pendziwol ($8.95)

Though her mind is still sharp, Elizabeth’s eyes have failed. No longer able to linger over her beloved books or gaze at the paintings that move her spirit, she fills the void with music and memories of her family—a past that suddenly becomes all too present when her late father’s journals are found amid the ruins of an old shipwreck.

With the help of Morgan, a delinquent teenage performing community service, Elizabeth goes through the diaries, a journey through time that brings the two women closer together. Entry by entry, these unlikely friends are drawn deep into a world far removed from their own—to Porphyry Island on Lake Superior, where Elizabeth’s father manned the lighthouse seventy years before.

As the words on these musty pages come alive, Elizabeth and Morgan begin to realize that their fates are connected to the isolated island in ways they never dreamed. While the discovery of Morgan’s connection sheds light onto her own family mysteries, the faded pages of the journals hold more questions than answers for Elizabeth, and threaten the very core of who she is.

The back of the book included praises for the novel from other authors. As I read on what they have to say, it looks like the story is really promising.

Since the back of the book is dedicated to brief reviews, the story’s synopsis is printed on one of the dust jacket’s inside flaps.

The story brought together two unlikely characters: a blind elderly woman named Elizabeth, and a naughty, reckless teenager, Morgan. At first, you would think that the characters won’t even jive because of their different personalities, but becoming Elizabeth’s eyes to explore and know more about herself by reading her father’s journal, Morgan has become an important character in her life.

The two also learned that their fates were connected. But as Morgan discovers more about herself, Elizabeth holds more questions. The story is really heartwarming, and it will definitely bring tears to your eyes so better have a box of tissues ready.

The Last Harvest by Kim Liggett ($6.95)

Kim Liggett draws on her childhood during the Satanic Panic for a chilling tale of magic in The Last Harvest.

“I plead the blood.”

Those were the last words seventeen-year-old golden boy quarterback Clay Tate heard rattling from his dad’s throat when he discovered him dying on the barn floor of the Neely cattle ranch, clutching a crucifix to his chest.

Now, on the first anniversary of the Midland, Oklahoma, slaughter, the whole town’s looking at Clay like he might be next to go over the edge. Clay wants to forget the past, but the sons and daughters of the Preservation Society—a group of prominent farmers his dad accused of devil worship—won’t leave him alone. Including Ali, his longtime crush, who suddenly wants to reignite their romance after a year of silence, and hated rival Tyler Neely, who’s behaving like they’re old friends.

Even as Clay tries to reassure himself, creepy glances turn to sinister stares and strange coincidences build to gruesome rituals—but when he can never prove that any of it happened, Clay worries he might be following his dad down the path to insanity…or that something far more terrifying lies in wait around the corner.

At the Publisher’s request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

The brief reviews really sparked my curiosity, and I want to start reading the novel right away after glancing at them.

That bloody red color of the endpaper sent shivers down my spine. I don’t know but I had a feeling that this book is more than just your average YA horror novel! That “I plead the blood” in red font also gave me the feeling that this will be a crazy and creepy ride.

The story is about the 18-year old guy, Clay Tate. His dad died on the barn floor of the Neely Cattle Ranch while clutching a crucifix to his chest. This incident had cost him his golden boy quarterback reputation, turned down his position in the Preservation Society to focus working on the family farm and take care of his little sisters, and he also thinks that like his old man, he’s also on the brink of insanity.

Though every day looks like normal in Midland, Clay felt that there’s something wrong going on in his town, but there are just a few people he can trust. He fears for the safety of the people close to his heart, his family, and the girl he loves. The story is really engaging, but I have to say that it’s not your average YA horror, I guess this novel is intended for older teens, it’s unsettling that it makes one of the best horror novels around!

It’s really a wild ride this month with the 2 books from this box! We started with a heartwarming novel and the second is a well-written creepy tale! I really like the horror novel, what else will you expect from Kim Liggett? The story is really enticing and you wouldn’t want to put the book down until you hit the last pages! These books deserve spots on my list of favorite books as well! If you love to discover new YA titles and authors, you should try this subscription, and if you aren’t into YA books, Bookcase Club has other genres: Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Mystery/Thriller!
