We’re so excited about the contents of the box!

The box comes with a tri-fold information booklet.

The booklet also lists all the activities included in the box: Shakespearean Insults, Family Emergency Plan, and a Dragon’s Beard Candy.

The booklet has lots of things to share as well! It has stuff about the author of this month’s featured book, Lenore Look, and the illustrator, LeUyen Pham.

Everything in the box!

Alvin Ho #1: Allergic to Girls, School, And Other Scary Things by Lenore Look ($6.93)

Alvin Ho is an Asian American second grader who is afraid of everything—elevators, tunnels, girls, and, most of all, school. He’s so afraid of school that, while he’s there, he never, ever, says a word. But at home he’s a very loud superhero named Firecracker Man, a brother to Calvin and Anibelly, and a gentleman-in-training, so he can be just like his dad.

From the author of the ALA Notable Ruby Lu series comes a funny and touching chapter book—perfect for both beginning and reluctant readers— that introduces a truly unforgettable character.

The back of the book lists some things you should know about Alvin Ho, the main character of the series.

Alvin is a very shy boy who doesn’t talk in school, and he’s afraid of almost everything. His character is actually relatable!

The author has a humorous writing style and there are heartwarming bits in this story as well. Although the illustrations were in black and white, we find them pretty awesome!

Here are this month’s bookmarks, one with book-specific vocabulary words and the other with discussion questions. The questions can be used to start a discussion among the kids, especially if you use the book in a class.

One of the bookmarks also features 5 ways to make reading a grand adventure!

To support common core, like in a book club, group, or working with an adult helper, the box provided a questionnaire so the readers can have further discussion about the story.

They also provided possible answers to the discussion questions.

It’s nice to know how the kids are taking the stories by posing these questions and letting them express themselves by answering them. Their answers will vary, but surely, everyone will learn a thing or two from each other.

The next book-inspired activity is about roleplaying!

Read the below prompts as you guide your reader through a series of tricky real-life situations. Talk out each situation with your reader, or let a book club talk through possible ways of handling each situation together. Once the group has determined a good plan for dealing with the situation, help your reader(s) act it out. It is much easier for people to do the “right” thing if they have already practiced a way to handle a tough situation.

Another activity teaches us about Shakespearean “insults”!

Alvin and his dad can toss insults like Shakespeare! William Shakespeare wrote some amazing plays and poems 400 years ago. Many of them included some excellently rude remarks. Mix and match the insults below by choosing a word from each column. But remember, like Alvin discovered, even fancy insults can get you in trouble!

The box provided more activity sheets! It has questions related to the story:

Alvin finds a perfect match in Flea. What qualities do you look for in a good friend?

What qualities do you have that make you a good friend?

Here’s another important sheet, which will make the kids aware of where to go during an evacuation, in case of calamities or emergencies.

As emergencies can happen anytime, it’s important that you and your family have ways to communicate. Here is a sheet where you can provide numbers where you can contact the rest of your family.

They even provided sheets that you and your family can fill with important information and emergency plans!

They also provided this brown pillow box which you can fill with things that you’ll need during an emergency.

The box included materials for making superhero costumes. My kids started working on the masks!

We got two eye masks, one in green and the other in blue. Both come with straps.

My son tried it on and it fits him perfectly.

There are shape cut-outs that we can use to decorate the superhero costume!

The included cape is reversible. One side is blue and the other is green!

My older son decorated the blue side with the shape cut-outs!

This is a fun activity that helps bring out their creativity!

There are lots of cutouts to stick on the cape!

My daughter enjoyed reading the story aloud and she answered some of the activity sheets as well!

Here’s my older son donning the costume! He looks awesome!

My boys read the story after decorating the masks and the cape. The two enjoyed reading and relating to the protagonist of the story!

Our very first Lit League box is amazing! There’s a new book that my kids loved, plus activities that we all had fun doing together. We also appreciate the inclusion of discussion questions. It’s what makes them different from other book subscriptions, as they encourage us to talk about what the kids think of the story after reading it. The highlight of the box is definitely the superhero costume. My sons enjoyed decorating them and then wearing them after! Overall, we’re happy with this new box, and we’re all looking forward to more cool stories and activities that the whole family can enjoy!
