Butcher Box is a subscription box service that delivers premium quality meat for $129 per month. Each box comes with a selection of meat (about 15-20 meals worth) that has been carefully cut and prepared. The Butcher Box brings back that unique experience you get when you visit your local butcher shop. Their specialty is 100% grass-fed beef, but they also provided mixed subscription options. You can also have the box delivered every two or three months depending on your needs.

This is a review of our Beef & Chicken Box. Our box this month includes ground beef for life (2 pounds!) and wings for life (2 pounds!). We also added on 2 charcuterie variety packs.

Here’s a list of what we’re getting this month!

We’ve always had everything arrive rock-solid, so there have been no issues with temperature control during shipping. The meat arrives ready to throw in the freezer or thaw for use.

All the meats are vacuum-sealed in plastic, packed in an insulated bag, and then kept frozen within the outer soft-side cooler padding and box with a large dry ice pack.

According to this part of the box, they are made using eco-friendly and 100% recyclable materials.

Everything is portioned to a manageable size, so you can pull it from the freezer as needed without thawing more than you want. There are a couple of big roasts, but everything else is portioned smaller.

Here are all our choices!

Everything in my December 2019 box!

Genoa Salame, Prosciutto, Capocollo. Each bag contains 3 kinds of meat: Genoa Salame, a salami that originated from the Port City of Italy; Prosciutto, another Italian dry-cured ham that is thinly sliced and usually served uncooked; and Capocollo, a traditional Corsican pork cold cut made from the dry-cured muscle running from the neck to the fourth or fifth rib of the pork shoulder.

The cold cuts are all looking great! They are perfect for our cheeseboard, along with a variety of cheese and a pairing of the most delicious wines! You can see that each type of cut has some good marbling on them, ensuring that they’ve only used the highest meat quality.

Chicken Wing Sections. These organic chicken wings are non-GMO and USDA-certified. There are 3 packs, and each contains 7 to 10 pieces which are perfect for barbecues. They’re also great for frying and coating with a variety of sauces. They don’t contain hormones and steroids either!

Ground Beef. A monthly staple in our box, these grass-fed ground beef packs contain 85% lean meat and 15% fat, which is the perfect ratio if you’re going to make juicy burger patties!

As always, we got four separate packs, containing a pound of ground meat each. If you’re not really a fan of burgers, you can also try making casseroled dishes, or try to add them to pasta dishes!

Grass-Fed Beef Ribeye Steak. We love ribeye steak! Known as the king of steaks, it has a more pronounced beefy flavor than other cuts. The ribeye from Butcher Box also has one of the best marbling as the beef is grass-fed, which makes it really lean.

We have them in two 10 oz. packs. These grass-fed steaks are fairly lean and the bands of fat are adequate enough to provide the big, and greasy rib-eye flavor, and what’s great with this cut is that there isn’t much waste once cooked.

Farmer Focus Chicken Breast. The all-organic chicken breasts are boneless and skinless and are sourced from one of the meatiest and juiciest parts of the chicken.

Aside from the fact that chicken breasts are rich in protein, they are also easy and quick to cook so there’s more time in enjoying meals than prepping and cooking them!

Organic Chicken Thighs. Another chicken meat in our box is sourced from the thigh part. Each pack has 2 to 5 pieces of organic, boneless, and skinless thighs.

Thighs can be cooked in several ways like baking, grilling, or frying! They’re one of the best chicken parts for juicy and meaty fried chicken!

Organic Chicken Drumsticks. Each pack of these chicken drumsticks contains 4 to 6 pieces of organic, antibiotic-free meats. They’re also non-GMO. One of the meatiest and tastiest parts of the chicken, they’re best fried, along with the thighs!

Butcher Box is a premium meat box that makes it, of course, quite pricey. It’s alright as what we’re paying for is the quality of meat they are providing. Each box comes with 7 to 10 lbs of meat,  enough for around 20 individual meals (at a 5 – 8oz portion size), and works out to about $6.50 per portion for the meat – and there is no difference in cost between getting all grass-fed beef or mixing your box to include organic chicken and heritage pork. You may see those as “filler” items or as valuable variety. We love to stock up our freezer with a variety of meats that can be easily turned into delicious and filling meals in no time. I love the quality of the beef we got from Butcher Box. They arrived in a deep freeze and was portioned into manageable sized cuts, which also makes meal planning easier. We will always go for best quality meats that can be easily cooked into any dishes that we fancy, or indulge ourselves into home-cooked steaks every once in a while!

Stay tuned for our “what we made this month” post to show you our goodies all cooked up!
