My items were kept nice and cold with this special insulation.
This is more environmentally friendly than styrofoam and is just shredded cotton clothing wrapped in plastic. You can slit the plastic and throw the contents in the trash or compost and then recycle the plastic.
Everything looked good and was cold, the ice packs are doing their job! I did see some red juices from the strawberries but it didn’t seem to be all over everything.
Home Chef offers at least 10 selections available for 2, 4, or 6 people, plus a smoothie choice and a fruit basket selection. Meals for your box are suggested based on your preferences, but you can change the selections any time. The portions are large, and this is currently the least expensive and has the most choice out of any similar major subscriptions (for 2 people) – $9.95 per person per selection (they typically have one meal option a week that’s a premium meal and costs a little more, though).
More ice packs were under the bags and above the raw meat. The raw meat was wrapped separately and placed in its own zipper bag to avoid cross contamination. The rest of the items were packed together depending on which recipe they belong to. I ordered two meals for two, and a smoothie add-on, which means my shipping was free!
Everything in my box!
Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Thigh Pizza (40 minutes, Intermediate, 922 calories per serving) Each recipe comes with a recipe card that lists the ingredients included, which items you need at home and other important info you need to prepare the recipe.
The recipe is on the back of the card.
First I made sure everything that was supposed to be sent was actually in the box. I inspected my produce and it was all good!
I chopped the produce as directed.
I sauteed the chicken thighs until they were cooked through and then added the BBQ sauce. Some meals allow you to make substitutions, like choosing chicken breasts for this recipe, for an additional charge.
I assembled the pizzas and then placed them directly on my oven rack with the aluminum foil-lined sheet on the rack below them to catch any spills.
After baking, I topped with cilantro, green onions, and crushed red pepper. These were amazing! The naan is perfect for a single serving pizza and has an almost buttery flavor. The chicken was tender and sweet and it all went together so well. This was a very generous portion. You might even be able to split one serving between two people if you served a salad on the side. Or save half for lunch the next day.
Cowboy Steak Sandwich with Chile-Cumin Oven Fries (45 minutes, Intermediate, 966 calories per serving) I went with this sandwich because it seemed like a manly meal and I thought my husband might like it.
Again, everything was in perfect condition!
I started by cutting the potatoes into french fry shapes. I tossed them with oil and the seasoning pack. I decided to taste the seasoning pack and it had sugar and salt in with the spices. I don’t think I should have used all of the pack, it made the end product salty.
I sliced the onions and minced the garlic.
I toasted the buns and set them aside.
Next, the onions went in the pan until they were brown. I added garlic at the end.
The steak was already sliced so all I had to do was dry it in paper towels and saute it in the skillet until it was fully cooked.
I stirred in the demi-glace and made two piles of meat. I topped each one with a slice of cheese, placed a lid on top, and let the heat melt the cheese.
Finally, I spread the green chili aioli over the buns and topped with the meat mixture. I tried the aioli first and it was SPICY but it was super tasty. I served with the potatoes and let me tell you, this was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten! It was extremely filling but the flavors just pulled together so well. I will say that it was very salty and while my husband liked it, he also commented about the salt. We are trying to cut down on sodium so I will need to watch that more closely next time and either choose lower sodium meals or maybe just use less of the seasoning packets.
Strawberry Fields Smoothie (10 minutes, Easy, 190 calories per serving) I added a smoothie and this made my shipping free!
The strawberry juices spilled a little bit and the items in this bag were kind of sticky but a quick rinse took care of it.
I washed, cored, and chopped the pear and placed it in a blender with the rest of the ingredients plus two cups of ice.
I blended it for 2 minutes and it made two generous servings. It was so yummy and sweet. The strawberries are already sweetened with sugar so no extra sugar or honey was needed. I thought it was a great smoothie, very refreshing and fruity.
I was super impressed with each of the meals I chose for March! They were easy to put together and the hardest thing I had to do with any of them was slice and dice. The flavors were so good and the ingredients were fresh and in perfect condition. The serving sizes were huge, too! My box was $49.70 this month with free shipping.
