Bokksu is a premium snack box that features authentic Japanese snacks, as well as a tea pairing to go with it. There are two levels to choose from: Classic Bokksu ($39.99 USD) includes an assortment of 20-25 premium Japanese snacks and a tea pairing; Tasting Bokksu ($25 USD) includes 10-14 premium Japanese snacks and a tea pairing. The snacks sent are not easily found outside of Japan and this subscription ships internationally from Japan. Shipping is already included in the price. I am reviewing the Classic Bokksu.

Other Japanese snack subscription services use mass-produced mainstream snacks that can be readily found in most Asian markets outside of Japan. Bokksu directly sources its artisanal snacks from local snack makers in Japan (some of whom have been around for over 200 years!). We only curate high quality and gourmet snacks, never filler items. We are also the ONLY service that handselects a tea pairing for each box to complement that month’s flavors.

First glimpse!

This box was packed full!

I received a card from the founder describing the theme for the month of February.

February’s theme is LOVE STORY. I was impressed with the booklet that was included in the box.

Info on Valentine’s Day in Japan was discussed.

A map gave a visual of where each snack came from.

Each product was shown and even listed which part of Japan it originated from, brand name, common allergens, and a description.

The back of the mini mag had info on how you can enter to win a free box.

Everything in the February 2019 Classic Bokksu!

Tai Chocolate My daughter reached for this treat first, and it is too cute!

The crispy wafer cookie is filled with chocolate. Try making a video or Boomerang with this before biting its head off.

Cubie “Hi” Milk Chocolate Yum, chocolate! I wasn’t sure what to expect when I placed these in my mouth, they were hard at first and I don’t even think they would melt in my hand.

Sure enough, as soon as I placed it in my mouth, it started to melt and it tasted really good, a very tasty milk chocolate.

Chocolate Anpan Anpan is a sweet roll with a bean paste or other filling; in this case, white bean paste!

You can see the filling inside the soft cookie. It is very sweet and similar to a brownie. I don’t think anyone would be able to tell that beans went into this decadent treat!

Beauty Red Herb Tea I love tea and enjoy a cup of herbal tea in the evenings. I followed the directions and used 180ml (around 6 ounces) of water, but I think I will use 8 ounces next time. After steeping the tea was a beautiful red color, and had some body to it, like drinking a cup of mulled wine. The flavor was fruity and since hibiscus tends to be sour, I added some sugar to taste.

Pancake Langue De Chat has all of the flavors of a classic stack of pancakes with syrup, except in a crispy, crunchy cookie.

The inside is a maple-flavored white chocolate sandwiched between two buttery cookies. This was my favorite of the snacks!

Arigato no Kimochi Senbei is a crunchy rice cracker with a sweet and salty coating.

Unlike the mini senbei shown later in the review, this one is thicker and a little hard to bite down on. I had to let it melt in my mouth a bit before chewing.

Baked Strawberry Chocolate  I love strawberries but for some reason they are not my favorite flavor when eating candy or snacks, go figure.

This little bite brought to mind a mash up of strawberries, white chocolate, and a Rice Krispies treat. It melted in my mouth and had little bits of crunchy cereal, and a flavor that reminds me of all of those instant breakfast drinks I consumed in high school.

Spicy Mini Heart Senbei  are one of my favorite treats to receive in subscription boxes!

There were 4 different flavors of rice cracker in this Bokksu exclusive item. There were perfectly crispy with a hint of spice, just right!

Japanese KitKat Strawberry Tiramisu ($9) What an interesting combo! There were 11 individual packs inside this bag.

The outside of the crispy wafers is covered with white chocolate that has strawberry flavoring. The inside has a coffee-flavored filling. I’m not sure coffee and strawberry work for me, especially since I’m not a coffee drinker, but it was definitely unique and fun to try this limited-edition flavor!

Bokksu is easily my daughter’s favorite box! She loves to watch me unbox it and reads the info booklet to me as I pull the products out of the box. The February box was perfect for a month that includes Valentine’s Day, without going overboard or cheesy. The packaging is always neat and I love discovering new flavors and favorites, like the tea and crispy pancake cookie. You can usually find the products available in the Bokksu online shop the month after they go out to subscribers. Plus, a whole bag of limited edition KitKats? That was so cool!
