We have complete spoilers for the February 2019 Boxwalla Book Box! Last day to subscribe is February 10.

Each box includes:

The first book included is Israeli writer.Amos Oz’s Judas ($14.99)Judas was written in Hebrew in 2014, and it was translated into English in 2016. The beauty of Amos Oz’s prose comes from a certain precision. It is not a labored but a seemingly effortless precision, that not only adds beauty to his prose, but also allows him to grapple with complex philosophical, moral & political issues in this novel, like a literary surgeon. Sadly, Amos Oz passed away this December. We celebrate his life with this beautiful book, set in 1950s Jerusalem.

The second book is Pakistani writer Khadija Mastur’s The Women’s Courtyard ($18.95). The Women’s Courtyard was written in 1962 in Urdu and this English translation was released in 2018. The story starts in pre-independence India, and is the story of a Muslim family before, during and after ‘Partition’ (the partition of India into India and Pakistan). After Partition, the family moves from India to Pakistan. Unlike most ‘Partition’ literature from this era, this novel operates almost like an Ozu film, with most social & political events observed under the guise of a domestic drama.

As an edible bridge between Pakistan and Israel, we have included some award winning Halvah from artisan halvah company Halvah Heaven, in the flavor Cardamom Orange ($6). This Halvah is made in very small batches, from ground sesame seeds, & with organic sweeteners. It is flaky, crumbly, not-too sweet, and oh so satisfying. Perfect for nibbling while reading, it is vegan, gluten free and nut free.
