truLocal is a Canadian meat subscription that lets you customize a box of local cuts of meat, fish, and seafood to be delivered monthly. They have two sizes of box, Small and Regular, and you are able to completely customize the contents using a points system. Certain items are worth set point values – for example, a one pound tub of BC prawns is 4 points, while a pack of lean ground beef is 1 point. The small box has a limit of 9 points, while the regular box has a limit of 20.

Delivery can be set to every two weeks, three weeks, monthly, or six weeks — giving you a lot of time between shipments so you don’t have to worry about rushing to finish everything.

Here’s my box! This is the regular box.

The box includes an information card.

One of the information cards has more information about the origins and quality of the products in your box — it’s all local, hormone/antibiotic free, and no extra flavours are added so you can tailor it exactly how you like.

A recipe for a Greek chicken recipe is included!

On to the selections for my box!

Chicken Breasts (4 breasts, 2 points) – A classic staple you can use in so many ways. I bake mine and then use it hot or chilled for sandwiches, soups, or as the main course.

Boneless Pork Chops (2 portions, 1 point) – I’m not a huuuuge pork chop fan but I will definitely use this as an excuse to find some new recipes to try. Maybe something I can cook low and slow in my slow cooker.

Bacon (1 package, 1 point) – You absolutely can’t go wrong with bacon! I try not to eat too much of it but it’s perfect to add to a sandwich or a breakfast dish.

100% Grass Fed Honey Garlic Smokies (2 packages, 3 points) – My uncle works for Freybe so I grew up on smokies, regular hot dogs just don’t cut it! These have a delicious honey garlic flavour, and contain NO gluten or dairy! (Also, I love that these smokies are by a company that uses the Ogopogo sea monster on their labels — she’s our version of Nessie!)

BC Sockeye Salmon (4 fillets, 4 points) – BC salmon arguably is the best salmon around… but I might be biased. It’s so easy to make, either baked in the oven or in a pan. I like that we were sent two different cuts – the thicker, skinny fillet and the thin long fillet. Either way, I find salmon cooks evenly and is pretty much foolproof.

Stewing Beef (1 package, 1 point) – A mixture of round roast, flat roast, and sirloin tip roast. I can’t wait to cook this in my slow cooker in a chili or a stew!

Lean Ground Beef (1 package, 1 point) — Lean ground beef is the perfect addition to chili, tacos, or casserole. truLocal also offers 100% grass-fed ground beef and extra lean as options as well.

Burgers (8 patties, 2 points) — Huge, generous patties of beef! Seriously, these portions are incredible! truLocal suggests trying different toppings and being creative, like peanut butter, or a fried egg!

Striploin Steak — I saved the best for last… a delicious striploin steak. Look at those stripes of fat along the edges… yum! I LOVE steak and I don’t buy it for myself very often since it feels so indulgent… this will definitely be a treat to prepare and enjoy.

I was really, really happy with what was chosen for my truLocal box! Everything added up to around 20 points, and I like that it was a nice mixture of beef, pork, and fish. TruLocal recommends the small box for a single person, and the regular box for a couple or a family. I live by myself, so this will last me quite some time! I am very happy that all of the products are local right here in BC. If you are a carnivore like me, truLocal is a great way to support local businesses, pick and choose your cuts of meat and fish, and have it all packed and delivered without having to do the shopping yourself.

    Hi Valerie,
I would like to give this box to my son who lives in BC for a Christmas present. What is the best way to do this? I would like to give him a 6 month subscription of a box a month please. Thank you for helping me with this.

I’m in SoCal so quite a bit outside the shipping range!

Haha, oh gosh okay fair enough! 😀 Glad to hear that you’re a fan, though. BC definitely does seafood right. I remember ordering Fanny Bay oysters in a fancy airport restaurant in New York and they were $6 each! My family had a cabin right there in Fanny Bay and we would collect buckets of them right in our “front yard” for years to enjoy. Now I’m craving oysters…

    Valerie,
The pictures of the beef patties look like there are 4 patties in each package. What an amazing option for getting premium meat, poultry, fish, and seafood! I wish there was such an option where I live! I rarely buy fish as it is almost exclusively farm raised! I would LOVE to be able to reasonably access BC wild caught Alaskan salmon! Please update after trying each of your selections!

Hey Jaclyn! You’re right, they were stacked one on one in the packages. The steak was amazing, and the smokies were sooo juicy and fresh (though I found the honey was a bit too sweet of a flavour for me). I’m planning on thawing out the ground beef to make taco soup this weekend! Have you checked to see if they ship to your area? They’re not just in BC but in a few other provinces as well. Not sure if it would be the same farms/resources or not depending on your location.
