Doodle Crate is a member of the KiwiCo family geared toward kids 9+. It inspires young makers to learn new skills and gain creative confidence through craft and art projects by teaching them basic and intermediate techniques of a new artistic medium each month. The sky is the limit, and crafts made from the same kit can be kept simple, or they can be made as intricate as the artist desires.

Though geared toward kids, Doodle Crate is gender neutral and also excellent for anyone (even adults) wanting a craft subscription. In our experience, this is the best “arts and crafts” box for older kids, tweens, teens, and adults – the end result is nearly always something you will want to save!

This month’s project: HANDCRAFTED SLIPPERS!

Doodle Crate Instruction Book

Doodle Crate tends to focus on a single craft and contains only what you’ll need for the project. This month is about making your own footwear!

The booklet has excellent, textbook quality background on the subject matter of the project. Every Crate is a project and a lesson in technique – when you are finished, you should have a usable handcrafted item and a new skill.

It’s loaded with high-quality pictures and illustrations to provide you ideas and help you along at the same time. They also produce a video tutorial for each project, too.

Doodle Crate is great for providing perspective and inspiration for their projects, showing examples of the medium in real life settings.

Handy tips are located throughout the instructions, and they always include some options for customizing your work using alternate techniques or additional details. This Crate is suitable for a wide range of ages, and older kids and adults can bring as much complexity to their projects as they want.

The booklet proceeds step-by-step, from start to finish, with detailed guidance the whole way. The numerous diagrams explain every step clearly and make it practically impossible to go off track.

At every phase of the project, Doodle Crate presents several options to bring added personality to your work – and you are always free to do something completely original. After all, it is YOUR creation.

Doodle Crate Materials

Every crate comes with everything you need to complete the project (except for a few basic items from your home), as well as a booklet.

The box provided some foams and sole templates for this project.

Here are the cushion templates and padding for a comfier footwear.

The box also provided templates and felt to create the handcrafted slippers.

For design, the crate also provided felt stickers and even tags!

Most of the needed materials came in with the box, so you’ll just need some clear tape, scrap papers, and glue from your household.

Doodle Crate Activity

My son started off by tracing the pattern on the felt after measuring his feet and selecting the correct template. Just like the tip from the booklet, it says that it’s better that you lay out the patterns carefully so you won’t run out of materials (felt).

After carefully laying and tracing the pattern out, we are ready to cut. Just supervise the kids when using sharp objects like a pair of scissors, and sewing!

Here, my son is sewing some of the slipper parts.

He’s really doing a great job at this. It took some perserverance, but he made it the whole way through.

He’s done! Look at that, he made his own slippers, and they really look cool too!

You can also design your pair however you want. Doodle Crate already provided the decorating materials, and it’s all up to you how you want your pair to turn out.

It’s an exclusive pair of slippers from Doodle Crate… As the tag says so!

I love how my son uses different felt colors on both the insoles and outside of the slippers. That way, there’ll be no worries about running out of materials. It shows how smart he is to decide on his own, and materializing his own craft!

I can say that my son is really a great craftsman! He did all of this project on his own, traced and cut the materials, designed, and even sewed them all together! I love how this crate teaches the kids how to be independent, like deciding and doing the project for themselves, and I’m really proud of how these slippers turned out. This box’s projects are a great way for the kids to take their time and make worthy stuff that they can also use or play with! He is SO proud of his new awesome castle slippers!
